My friend Nadine advised me to fill a thermos with hot tap water, drop the seeds in, put the stopper on and let them soak overnight. I did that and got great germination on the Castor Beans.

Oleanders are worse than Castor bean plants. Just one leaf is enough to kill a child. Very worrisome since they are grown everywhere in warm climates.

my neighbor lets his wonderful, sweet, adorable little children run down into my yard, mashing roses and tulips that i had planted on the hill. thats why i moved the roses and tulips. 2 weekends ago i put up a fence that is 5 ft. high. im fixing to post a no trespassing sign. and in a few weeks when i go to put my loofas and castorbean seedlings out i will tell him that they are very poisoness. again i will politely ask him to keep his sweet little darlings out of my yard and away from the fence.( my lawyer said as long as its posted and i tell him...its all on him.) so... i want oleander because of the beautiful foliage. i would also like to plant some monkshod, but just rubbing against them can cause damage to skin, for humans and animals, so that i wont plant. it seems that if a plant is poisoness it has the prettiest foliage or flowers on it, and it just makes you want to have some.

MsKitty,
I started 4 different ones that I received in trade from this past fall. I started them about 6 weeks ago in my friend's greenhouse and they all came up within a week or so. I have taken a few and repotted them into quart containers and the others are still in the 6 pack seed trays I started them in. I received two types that were solid black along with my variety and Austin's. Mine and Austin's look about the same, but the others are sure darker and redder to start out with. I plan on planting one of each different ones around the back and see what kind of differences they have.

That's what I want to use them as, Ms.kitty. A screen along a fence line. I direct sowed mine and there coming right up. Only problem was a cat deciding to use the seed bed as a cat box. LOL!!!

Has anyone tried the zanzibarinsis variety? It's supposed to get bigger leaves.

MsKitty,
I do not have a "black" plant. Seeds were solid black and the plant is just showing alot more dark bugandy than the ones I have had in the past. Mine are green with burgandy just starting to show. The plants from the solid black seeds started with much darker foliage, but definitely not black...

Aren't these solid green? Nice looking plant, but I, personally, prefer the ones with burgandy as they add some color to the garden. Lord, knows I have enough green with my nanners...

Yeah they are just green. A cross between the two would be a sweet looking plant.

Castor plants help keep the deer out of my yard. I plant Daturas also, and they work wonders when mixed in with other "edible" plants. I haven't had much problem with ravenous deer for a couple of years.
