Bordelons, Zebrinas, DWCav
I have quite a few potted, nicely rooted, pups of
the Musa Bordelon, which has become my favorite banana here in my Zone 6-7 suburban Pittsburgh PA garden. It has become my favorite since it multiplies and grows the fastest, is the least finicky and this year. But most importantly, a four ft plant I overwintered upstairs at an inside window, then plantedd out in the ground (in late April) in a bed in the middle of the lawn has grown to 6', has already made a mat consisting of two 7' pups and five others of various sizes, and the mother plant is now producing a flower bud. I have it lit from below with Malibu lights and at night it looks like a spectacular tropical island of red foliage, set in the middle of my lawn, a rather unusual sight here in slightly less than tropical western PA. I have the Bordelons and also Dwarf Cavendish "high color" minis in smaller $5and larger $10 sizes and a few 12-18" very nice Zebrinas that I could part with for $15. You can send me a message or questions by direct email: max_9432@yahoo.com . I could send you pics if you'd like and would be willing to ship to you by Priority Mail or UPS depending on your preference and whether you wanted the plant(s) bareroot or dirtball and pots intact, etc. I have very good feedback for shipping plants all over the US for the last two years on ebay and would like to workout payments through paypal. I also have other tropicals and pond plants if you are interested: well rooted Mexican Petunia cuttings - various canna varieties, giant dwarf papyrus, umbrella palms, etc. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Max

Re: Bordelons, Zebrinas, DWCav
I'm not sure if it is correct etiquette to add updates or more information here in a classified lisitng posting. But since the (grand)mother Bordelon plant of the ones I mention here has made a flag leaf and is now getting ready to produce its first flower (and my very first banana flower ever), I was going to update its progress here (as long as it is cool with the site monitors and such - if it is not I am sure Bryan or someone will correct me ;-).
So just some days back, I was wondering why my mother Bordelon plant suddenly made this little wimpy leaf when the pup right next to it was throwing up another large 3-4' leaf roll and would now be surpassing "mom" in height. Then it dawned on me that it must be an example of one of these "flag" leafs that I had read about so many times in posts here (but something I had never experienced before in person)! And yet there was also something very familiar about this little atypical leaf. I have been growing cannas for many years, and what suddenly dawned on me was that over the years I had observed that my cannas always produced a smaller non-typical leaf just before they sent up their first flower bud, and now I was witnessing the very same thing with my first blooming banana! Cannas and bananas are so very similar in many more ways than just their names! I'll try to get some pics up soon!

Re: Bordelons, Zebrinas, DWCav
Thanks for the plug Blake! Although I don't really have "tons" of Bordelons left, I have five or six of them remaining with the first frost fast approaching! - There has been a lot of local interest in getting one of the Bordelons, since I have a large bed of them in the middle of my front lawn, featuring multiple stems, and one with seven or eight hands of bananas showing. This has been proof to the local skeptics that ornamental Bananas growing in Pittsburgh is not really much more challenging than growing cannas.
However, I do need to clear my "banana orphanage" in the next month or so, just because my indoor storage space is capacity taxed! So if anyone wants to make me an offer for any of my extra, various sized remaining zebrinas, bordelons or hi color mini Cavendishs - please let me know. They are all healthy beautiful plants in need of a good home for the winter and I'm open to all offers! I tried to get Sally Struthers to make an infomercial for me to get help for the babies in MY orphanage, but her schedule was just a little too full according to her reps!! LOL Here is a few residents of the "banana orphanage", the front yard Bordelon bed, and the "fruit" of a little TLC! Feel free to contact me directly or thru mail here with any questions or for further pictures, if you like - max_9432@yahoo.com Thanks all! Max
