Tissue Culturing & Other Propagation Techniques of Banana Plants This forum is for discussing propagation techniques of banana plants. Tissue culturing is the popular process of creating clones from a source plant. There are other techniques to propagate banana plants however, such as nicking corms or dividing corms. Default What part to use?

Hello everyone. while i'm not even close to be able to tissue culture my banana yet, I've got a few questions i might as well get cleared up for when that time comes . Most of them i could probably find the answers for somewhere else, but my biggest question is WHAT PART TO USE?!? I have seen stuff about using meristem from the corm, but some sites have talked about other areas, like the flower. The info i was looking at recently said:
Quote:
Shoot cultures of banana start conventionally from any plant part that contains a shoot meristem, i.e. the parental pseudostem, small suckers, peepers and lateral buds . The apex of the inflorescence and axillary flower buds are also suitable explants for tissue culture initiation.
What is that supposed to mean?
Also, on a similar tangent, I have seem some stuff about nicking and dividing corms. What is that supposed to mean and how do I do that?
Can anyone help me out here?

I don't know how many threads came up when you searched this, but I know there are several. I do know you can only use the merristem.. ie the growth point. :^)

OK, then, so what do people mean when they say that they use the male flower? Do they contain some sort of meristem? Or perhaps it is harder to propagate from them or the other locations mentioned in various places?

It contains undifferentiated cells, which can be induced to form callus and ultimately shoots.

This technique is more advanced and requires different growth regulators, not really for the beginner.

And, yes there are many threads on this topic and others, all the information you could possibly need.

Also, what about "nicking corms," as is stated in the description of this part of the forum? I searched it up but cant find anything. does anyone know what that is supposed to mean?
