How long till Basjoo makes pups?
 
How long is it usually until Musa Basjoo makes pups? I have a plant that is about 2 feet right now.:03:

You might get lucky. . . I got a sword from a friend that is 5months+ about 3' and no sign of pups anywhere. . . but wait I see a crack in the soil sooo maybe soon.

I would say early next year. Mine usually pup at 2-3 foot of pseudostem, as this is mid October I doubt you will get any this year. Right now mine are going through a major pup production spurt. I added about 4 inches of well composted leaf mulch to my patch in early September and have seen about 15 additional pups arise in the last month. If you want major pup development good leaf mulch really helps, whatever you do don't be tempted to bring it indoors for the winter as this all but guarantees poor development of pups and weak initial growth in the early Spring. I say just cut it back to about a foot after the first couple of good freezes, protect with dry leaf and grass mulch about 18 inches will do maybe less in zone 7. After that just cover it up with a tarp and pull it off and clean up most of the mulch and sit back and watch a half dozen or so pups emerge from around the corm in early Spring. There is nothing like watching the explosive May growth of an established Basjoo patch, overwintering Basjoos indoors is a total waste of time AFAIC. The ones I've overwintered in the house and put back out did about as half as well as the outdoor ones. They also didn't start to pup until later in the year whereas the ones that stayed out pupped right away.

it depends on how much water and fertilizer you give it.
i watered mine everyday until it was soaked(it was in a large pot) and gave it blood meal every week and it sent out 3 pups when it was about 4 feet tall... banana plants grow like crazy when you provide them with a little extra. p.s. you cant really over water them during warm/hot days
