Explant source
Hello TC'ers!
From what I've read in many articles and here on the forum the only source of explants for banana TC is either meristematic tissue from a sucker or main pseudostem (saccrificing it) or embryo rescue material. If I understand correctly it should in theory be possible to do this (at least in other plant genera) derived from any other plant tissue as well right? E.g. a piece of leafsheet, root, flowerbud, ect. Did anyone ever try this or read anything about this? Kind regards, Remko. |

Re: Explant source
Meristematic tissue is the easiest way. Embryo's, if available, can be easy sometimes but the reaction is very variable between species so they can be difficult.
Basically if you start from anything else, (right now the only other options are from male flowers or leaf sheath base from other tissue cultured plants), regardless of whether or not you could perform it (it can be quite difficult), it requires that you either have flowering plants (which would also mean you have mature, suckering plants) or you have plants which are already in culture (which would mean you have already succeeded at what you are trying to overcome). So, just go with suckers or seed embryos. It is true that other plants may be cultured from leaf tissue or something else like that, but bananas are not one of them with current methods. |

That got cleared up quickly, haha!
Thanks for the answers guys! Kind regards, Remko. |
