already fruitified plant corm for macropropagation?

Hey nanners! I been asking myself quite a bit this question.....can you wait to harvest the bananas and then dig this finished corm up to make macropropagation? Or you have to do it with a "young" one?

not answering your question very straight. depending on the type of banana they usually pup first before flowering.

So....i have a orinoco with 3 "trunks", one with bananas. There is 6 new pups coming , no one of this 6 comes from the frutified trunk? Interesting......

back in the early 80's i bought a place with near a hundred orinocos on it. some body else planted them not i. i ate alot of those bananas not doing i thing to them. if you eat them when they are fully developed and still green they the meat is not white when you peal them they are orange. delicious very good eating. always wanted to do some in a dehydrator with a drop of tea honey.

It depends on the exact technique you are using, but they are not ideal for macropropagation. Better to use younger shoots around 4-6" diameter at the base. Previously fruited corms can be dug out and replanted elsewhere and they will produce more suckers, and you can dig those up and accelerate propagation some.

Yeah, old spent rhizomes work great and if you look at the rhizome as a source of stored nutrients or energy, the larger the rhizome the more pups it can produce. But the larger the rhizome the more crowded it will get and that increases the difficulty when separating. The reality is most sizes work great and once someone gets some experience they'll have more plants than they'll ever want. Last weekend I did a few hundred spent Florida rhizomes and that can yield a few hundred thousand new variegated pups. This weekend I've been working with the variegated dwarf Pisang Awak types which normally will have a lower yield, but still will produce a lot more than I want. Basically use anything you want, it'll all work.

First 2 photos are of macropropagating a 2" plant.

The photo below is a spent variegated Florida rhizome cleaned and ready for macropropagation.

So is this the same as taking pieces to make tissue culture plantlets? When I looked it up that’s what I got out of it.

Micro and macro are different.

Micropropagation is a method of tissue culture.

Are you using anything to push the pupping along like BAP or any fertilizers? And what is that substrate? DG?
