Default WANTED: D. Brazilian, CA Gold, Misi Luki, D Orinoco, Raja Puri Pups or Rhizomes

Dear All-

I was really encouraged by the update on banana hardiness (thanks JoeReal!). I want to thank all that have posted their info. I've been colleting it. I really think this winter has been a blessing in disguise! Everyone should take notes.

Last summer I created a "banana island" surrounded by rock paths. I don't have the bananas yet, but I am hoping to attempt to fruit an edible banana up here (it's called zone-denial). My basjoos are beautiful, but, as with most plants, I won't be completely happy with them until they are in my belly

This may not be the best time of season to request, but would anybody have any pups, plants or rhizomes that they need to get rid of of the following varieties?:

Dwarf Brazilian
California Gold
Misi Luki
Dwarf Orinoco
Raja Puri

(others of reported hardiness: Thousand Fingers, Monkey Fingers, Golden Rhinohorn, Mysore, Namwah; how they would do in my cool summer nights is anyone’s guess)

I am interested in pups or rhizomes as I have heard that they mature much quicker than tissue cultured plants. Many are offered for cheap on ebay, but I assume they are tissue.

I can trade plant material or purchase.

Thanks-

Mark

You'd probably do well if you could find some pups locally that are already potted and growing to get a head start on next winter. Have you checked with the local nurseries? Usually you can order good sized plants through them.

Local nurseries in Seattle only sell the M. basjoo and M. skim types and that's why I'm hoping to find some here. A nursery nearby, in a colder location than I'm in, had some cultivars, but said they were wiped out this past winter.

I can protect small "head start" plants in my greenhouse until they get bigger.

Hi Mark,
It's good to know somebody with the same interest. I live in Auburn, and have grown basjoo for many years now. They are huge and one is blooming now. I just got Cal Gold last month so it's still small. Dwarf orinoco is also small although I tried one tissu-cultured plant last year but it didn't survive the winter.

I'm also waiting for viente cohol that isn't cold hardy but they claim that it has a short producing cycle.

I'll try to get Misi Luki too:-)

Hey Lorenzo - what regulations do Italian customs have to allow you to import banana plants?
