Just wanted to give this info. Not familiar with the Variegated Florida but was told by a known nursery owner in California that an AE’AE would be hard pressed to survive the weather in my zone 9a. I really wanted one myself.
Just thought this would help.

I don't believe that to be true.. Depends on how your setting your banana up for success.. I'd say if you had a semi shaded south side of you house open for a banana that would be best w/ lots of mulch so it going to come back even if the stem gets taken out by the cold. Steve eats AeAe almost every year and live further N than you do..

Just passing along what was explained to me from a person that knows more about bananas than I do.
Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I agree 100% with shrek.

Gator, you should just hire a known landscaper to help you.

Probably should. It is just like everything else sometimes you get correct advise and most of the time you get wrong advise.

I’ve yet to lose a banana overwinter

So hopefully a variegated would be no different

I’m in coastal Georgia(9a) and mine have overwintered fine in my yard. If you get worried just give them some protection. I think you’d be fine to grow one where you are. Just my 2 pennies.
