Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
I know this is not a banana, but since this forum carries tropical lovers in general, I thought I would give it a shot.
The only place I can find it is PDN -- Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant' and they have a minimum $35 + shipping requirement. Since these plants sucker readily, I though someone might have one to offer for slightly less. Cheers, Ed. |

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
That's what has kept me from ordering, just a little too expensive for a quick growing suckering plant. Good luck with your search.

I have two in pots I had left them out over the winter, if they both come back perhaps we could arrange a trade.

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
you do know that japanese rice paper as it is commonly known do not have seeds but root extensions? I have been pulling them off my turf as they are horribly invasive, but easy to pull out.
If interested on a root cutting, let me know. I would prefer to trade for a banana I edo not have. Peace

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
Mine came from a landscaping firm. I do not know what the variety is. It has gigantic leaves. look in my collection. If interested, email me.
Do not understand common variety. What do the common ones look like? Mine do not look common, I assure you. Also will trade for banana pup that I might not have.

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
Do not expect a 25 ft. growth in dieback areas. Mine gets to 8-10 ft here in coastal carolina zone 8./

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
I ordered this plant from PDN 3 years ago. I started with one plant, now I have probably 75 plants. I can tell you one thing, you can believe it or not, at your discretion, LOL. It will only get that big if you pour water on it like there's no tomorrow, or if you grow it in a bog. The first year I had it, it was planted in an area where the water table was only about 6" below the surface. It was truly on steroids then. In the past 2 years, we have been in a drought. The plant has suckered and spread extensively, but even with frequent hose watering, it does NOT attain the same size. And I do live in a die back area. Heat is extreme here so it requires even MORE water.
I can't trade this plant to Texas from Florida (or to CA, HI, LA, AZ or PR) or I would have answered your ad by now.

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
I think shopgirl has a good point about dieback areas. So I am willing to buy or trade for a well-rooted pup (are these hard to divide from the mother?) of any kind, "Steroidal" or not.
I have several typical cold-hardyish bananas, such as Saba, Brazilian, D. Brazilian, Orinoco, D. Orinoco, Basjoo, etc. Ed. |

Re: Wanted: Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
I've got mine growing in my marginal plant sales area, but it's SLOOOOOOW growing right now. Probably not hot enough.
