Thanks I appreciate the effort. If you haven't yet you should grab yourself a root cutting of any you come across. This way they can cross pollinate. The you plant those seed and it will be different then the parent plants and so on.

Tony,

As a passiflora afficianado, I was wondering whether you've grown Passiflora maliformis (sweet calabash). I have a small seedling I'm hoping will do well for me. I've read it's a good-flavored fruit. Just thought I'd see what your experience with it (if any) might be.

This Passiflora is not as cold hardy as Edulis Frederick.Mine takes a hit each winter. If you are not growing Fredericks,I suggest you get it before Maliformis.Much more productive and more cold hardy.

Maliformis fruit

Nice photo, Tony. Thanks!

I have an edulis (not sure what variety) that I bought this summer which is rapidly climbing my patio cover. The maliformis is only a few inches tall and still growing, albeit slowly. Unless it really takes off soon, I doubt I'll be able to put it in the ground until next spring. Any suggestions on that score? If I pot it up and keep it under lights in the garage, it won't get too cold, I'm thinking.

Yes wait till spring .When you do plant it find a protected spot. Maybe under an overhang ,eaves ,patio.Mine will loose all the leaves in winter but comes back in spring

I am not sure why you would grow Maypops in a region where edulis and many others are hardy. Anyway, I have a slope covered with maypops (in SE PA) and should have lots of fruit next month. This is as aggressive a plant as bamboo and I pull shoots out of the lawn and herb garden weekly. I have been trying to grow other passiflora, but they all died this summer. The one passionfruit I grow successfully is probably gracilis - it produces grape-like fruit with little flavor and is a weed in my greenhouse. If you want seeds from either, I can collect next month. I buy from Logee's greenhouse in CT, which has quite reasonable prices. If anyone wants to contact me - I'm rbove@wcupa.edu.

I grow everything I can get my hands on.I have two edulis Frederick and two edulis edulis and 25 other varieties. Now I want to try hybridizing and Incarnata is a good one for this. Let me know when your seed are ready and we can trade.Or I'll contact you .

No sprout here yet. I started these off a few days after I received them, so if yours sprouted, mine should be on their way up then.

The laurifolia, caerulea, ligularis and edulis and maliformis are sprouted. The laurifolia was the first and then the others are came along. Hopefully more will sprout. They were all put in the same mix, coir and perlite, and fed light nutrients after they grew some and now the older ones are getting some MG solution. Although not a great performance, we did get some plants and will go on from there. Probable get some fruit in a year or two. Thanks

They start off slow but watch out once they get settled .If you can keep them actively growing through winter you may see fruit on some next year.Edulis and caerulea for sure.Remember the caerulea is a great pollinizer for for the others
