Anyone know anyone/anywhere in Canada that can sell me one or two Monkey Puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana)? Just to keep it simple and cheap, looking around roughly 12 inches, maybe ship it in a tube or something?

Well this guy ships international, and I just bought 3 off of him in the UK. So here is the ebay ad if anyone else is interested. Blown away I couldn't get any bites from anyone in Canada, especially on the West Coast, but what can ya do.

Well I did have one guy "from Vancouver", but the guy wanted me to Western Union his money to Cameroon to pay for his pineapple seeds, in turn he would ship two 12" Monkey Puzzles. Sounds legit :P

I'll have to look and see if I can find an old catalog from the company I bought them from (because I've forgotten the name). They're not cheap, but the quality is excellent. You may have some issues in NS though. I think you'll find it too damp and cold for them to survive.

Found 'em. $24.95 per tube.

They still have the description as "long spidery branches (or monkey tails?!)." I told them 20 years ago, the tree gets it's name from the leaves. The monkeys can't figure out how to climb the branches. Oh well.

Hey,

Thanks for the info, but that would probably cost a fortune (based on what you get) to get here considering the Phytosanitary certificate required and who knows what they'd charge to ship from the other side of the continent.

I ended up getting 3 of them at 8" for 15 pounds (approx 25USD at the time). The place you linked are selling one seedling at 6" for that price I paid for 3 and not including shipping or any other costs.

It's crazy how many plants I buy from overseas that get here way cheaper than my neighbor to the south

Yeah, they were always expensive but the quality was great. last time I bought from them was probably in 1998, so the prices have changed drastically since then.

Glad you found what you were looking for though!

Where is Sydney, anyway? I rode the Cabot Trail on my MC back in '93 and don't remember seeing it on the Cape or on the way in.

Not that it's large, but second largest behind the capital, but Sydney a part of CBRM municipality is approx 100,000 .. We are on the East Coast of Cape Breton.

Cabot Trail basically starts in the middle of Cape Breton, goes up the North East Coast down the West Coast and back to the middle, so you wouldn't of been near Sydney. The beginning of the trail in central Cape Breton is about 50 miles from Sydney to the East.

Start of the trail, in the middle, is approx at Baddeck (a little before), go up the East side to Ingonish, go West over towards Cheticamp and down to Inverness, and then back to Baddeck area, is the full loop of the trail. That's why you didn't see Sydney :P

I see it now. I parked my truck at the Alex Graham Bell Nat'l Hysteric Site and rode the bike counter-clockwise from there and back. I wasn't that far away, but I didn't go through it, so that's why it wasn't familiar.

If I'd had an extra day to hit Newfoundland, I probably would have ferried out of there though, wouldn't I?

Yes, you would have to .. If you look back at the map, you will notice North Sydney, which is well, north of Sydney

You will see the two seperate dotted lines with two "green things" in the water .. Those are the both ferries that leave to two different landings in NFLD.

The one on the left goes to Port aux Basques and is about 6 hour ride to go to the West side of NFLD. The one on the right that goes to the East, lands in Argentia, but that one is 18 hours.

By motorbike, you the owner, are responsible for strapping and securing your ride and the tie-downs are supplied and hooked into the flooring (unless it changed). They suggest if you are concerned about the quality of their strapping that you bring your own, such as this:

Although long, I'd suggest taking Argentia since it's only approx an hour ride to the capital, St. Johns; Super fun place. Personally have no knowledge, nor experience with any other part of NFLD. Of course, the highway does run all the way back to the Port aux Basque ferry crossing (which runs multiple times a day due to shorter distance), so if you're in it for the tourism, the drive is about 10 hours from that West coast landing ferry to St. Johns.

Anyways, I know you didn't ask about any of that, but you're that much wiser if you ever go there!

I'll never be up there again. I was trying to pick up all of the Maritimes, but missed NF. I had the bike securely strapped down in the back of the truck. I took it all over the Lower 48 like that as well. Never had any problems.

I got some really odd looks while I was up there too. I was driving a pristine 1969 Ford F250 Camper Special (no camper) with a cafe racer in the back. Between the antique truck and the racing bike, I had quite a few looks and inquiries, LOL. Great White Customs was positive I was there to sell the bike and made quite sure to see if it was still in the truck when I came back into Calais.

Lotsa friendly folks up there though!
