Ube Purple Yam seed potatoes for sale or trade
I have a limited amount of bulbils available, and a few large size roots already sprouting. I would prefer a trade. I am always looking for new bananas especially the following, any Iholena types except tigua, any Fe'e, French plantain, and most any other plantain, dwarf red and green, Kru, and most anything not on my list.
The bulbils will make a massive root in 2 years if done right. I am talking 30 to 40 pounds, maybe more. The large roots I have will do the same thing by winter of this year. Plant in large above ground mounds, made with rich soil and leaves. Plant them at the top, and cover with soil and mulch. It will make harvesting very easy in comparison to planting at soil level. Put the mounds if possible next to a tree, with something like a bamboo pole for the vine to climb up and unto the tree. As the plant grows and climbs into the canopy, continue to add rich soil and leaves at the top and sides, increasing the little hill/mound. This will maximize the harvest. Its a beautiful purple yam that can be used in a lot of ways. The purple pigment is anthrocyanin, a powerful antioxidant found in blueberries as well. The roots can often be stored for months just by leaving them alone. Can make purple fries, baked like a potato, combined with flour for purple bread and more. Good dense source of calories, and grows easily. |

Please post a picture of the yam? What is the color of the yam skin?

Thanks for posting the pics. A lot of people confuse the sweet potato with the yam. The purple sweet potato is regularly called a "purple yam" and sold as a "purple yam". The purple sweet potato has a smooth red skin and pointed tubular and only produce tubular under ground; the purple yam has a brownish/red skin & rough texture with rounded ends and produce tubular in the air & underground. .... So you do have the real purple yam. I do have several nanas not on your list (real Blue Java; dwf Namwah; dwf red; 1000 finger; dwf Orinoco) If you are passing though the South Georgia area give me a call. I would be glade to share. |

I grow both, but the yam produces better and is less prone to problems. Your right about people confusing yams with sweet potatoes which are a completely different genus. Even with yams, there are several purple varieties. Another type is called the moonshine yam found in the Caribbean. Its not as nice though. |
Re: Ube Purple Yam seed potatoes for sale or trade
That is a nice haul, and looks more similar to the Ube, than the white version. I also have a yellow variety I found growing wild in the country. Really amazing crop. Would you like to trade a few bulbils?

Re: Ube Purple Yam seed potatoes for sale or trade
Okay, I don't like either yams or sweet potatoes, but what is the difference? Obviously, they are different genus es/i from what you have said, but I always thought they were related. Please explain what I'm missing, thanks!

Re: Ube Purple Yam seed potatoes for sale or trade
Most people confuse then due to a company that makes canned sweet potatos, but calls them yams. I am not a big fan of orange sweet potatoes, but the yam tastes nothing like it. They can vary in taste, but they are more similar to an standard potato, but with a different texture. They also grow differently, and produce more than sweet potatoes. They are not related at all.

the pictured yam is UBE ( i also have white yam growing but not pictured) I went all in on planting a lot of white yam so I won't have any bulbils until winter but I can do a trade for the yellow. i'll have to upload a pic of the white, but if you search for Name' yam it should come up with some info/pics. |
