Very satisfied with my bananas from Larry, they're doing great in the ground with all of this rain we've been blessed with this year.

Hi I'm looking for 2-3 banana varieties to grow here in inland SoCal, Zone 9a/9b
The coldest temperature we experienced this winter was 28F and last summer we broke a heat record at 118F.
To sum it up: dry, hot summers and a few nights below freezing in the winter. It also gets pretty windy from the infamous Santa Ana winds.

So far I've purchased two Agristarts 'Ice Cream' on ebay and they are doing great so far. About a leaf every two days.

I didn't do much research before getting those but I want to get another 2-3 varieties to grow and was wondering what would be some good options that can handle my climate. They will be placed next to a 6' high fence which faces southwest so there will be some late afternoon sun protection for the young naners. Drip irrigation will keep them hydrated.

So far I have Pisang Raja and Dwarf Namwah on my list as they seem like tasty cultivars. Maximum height isn't an issue but I'd prefer cultivars that don't need to be propped up or have leaves that tear up easily from the wind.

Would love to hear what recommendations you guys might have!

The Ice Creams I sell on ebay are the Agristarts "Ice Cream". You'll also notice I DO NOT mention the words "Blue Java" in those listings on ebay, I only say "Ice Cream" which is what agristarts named that variety they sell.

Always good to ask.

I do however have real Blue Javas, which I only sell on here for Real Banana Aficionados, now such as yourself, as they are few and go very quickly.

I also have both Dwarf Namwah and Pisang Raja.

Here in Phoenix some of our top picks are Dwarf Namwah and Rajapuri. Lots of Ice Cream bananas here they just need propping to fruit.

We have a similar climate if not a little colder even, and I know of Goldfinger, 1000 fingers, tall Namwah, Manzano, Dwarf Brazillian, Texas Star (may or may not be Orinoco), Orinoco, & dwarf Orinoco fruiting. And I'm sure there are many more.

The cold sensitive ones include the reds, and I avoid those. You are right that short fat trunks are helpful.

I grow (and sell) about 12 different varieties in San Diego near the coast and I have a vigorous mat of Pisang Ceylon at my horse barn in Lakeside which probably has a similar microclimate than you have out in Ramona. Send me a PM if interested.
