Being a bonsai enthusiast actually, I am surprised to see a Bonsai banana since it doesn't really lend itself to the art very well. The leaves are too large and it grows from a corm - most difficult to control since bonsai involves trimming the central tap root. I have around 20 bonsai trees, but never considered Bananas to be one that I would try.
Mame is the smallest form of bonsai. I suppose that by keeping the corm confined it would limit growth, but that's a guess. |

Although I think selling one on eBay is kinda crazy, because its very easy to do it yourself, a "bonsai" banana isn't really that far off. I gave a 'Little Prince' to a friend as a gift, and told them to keep it in the pot (about 4in) intending it to kinda be a bonsai type plant, after over a year it looks great and stays small (about 5 in) and continues to grow while maintaining a nice form, I don't know how long it will stay happy but its fine so far. I suppose this wouldn't be a conventional bonsai, but it can work...bananas are very good at staying small in pots while staying healthy and growing, they may not get big but they wont die.

Yeah, it had been a while since I heard the eBay song and I had to play it and it gave my wife a good chuckle since it fits me pretty well.....almost, anyways, though I have restrained myself in the past year to mostly plants than can always be composted if they die on me.
I have to say, though, that I've been limiting my purchases of purely ornamental plants. I almost bought a Siam 50/50 the other day but held back. With high fuel and resulting transportation costs, along with some concerns I have about the global economy in general, I have more of an urge to grow things that are actually useful producers of food rather than devoting energy sources to things that are purely ornamental. I don't believe zone 9 will ever allow me to grow bananas as a staple food item, but I can still get enjoyment out of them and get some fruits from time to time. Just my $.02 |
