are you a proud parent???? stupid question, i know but had to ask. lol. how long did it take for yours to start producing fruit? ive looked at a lot of info, but a lot of info is kinda of vegue. when i got mine it was like 6-8 in tall. we have the new leaf and it has a pup on it(had the pup on it when i got it.) let me tell you what stupid thing i did with my other nana tree. i had fred next to the window( the window is covered w/ plastic) and i didnt think that he would get cold...i looked at his leaves the other day and they started withering. i almost fell in the floor crying! so this morning i cut off the last 2 leaves that withered and were turning yucky colors, and moved him way away from the window 2 days ago. i keep it a constant 72 degrees in the den and have a humidifier going 24/7 on low. i went and got a small heater for when it gets real cold outside.i have to keep the den door closed....i have cats. cats and dirt dont get along to well. and eventually i would like to get a few plants that if they eat they will get sick. but i guess in the end hell be ok. however i got another suprise this morning. im growing jacaranda trees from seed. got the first sprout 4 days ago, looked at them this morning and we have more trees! a total of 4. WAHOOOO! now i wait on the other 12 to come up.( im a tree freek!). im so happy for you that you got fruit on your tree. MANY MORE HAPPY BUNCHES TO YOU!

They grow pretty easy but aren't the prettiest banana plant. The leaves aren't real wide or real dark green and they tend to discolor fairly quickly. but it does grow pretty quick and pups well.
The fruit is green then just turns nice yellow just like store bought bananas. Not sure what you were looking at that turns red then black - maybe Jamaican Red's? So far for flavor, it is right up there with Raja Puri. That might be a good one for you - pretty cold hardy and doesn't get real big. That is a Raja Puri clump at the corner of the house and Ice Cream at the far right side of the pic. I always have pups from both of those that I have to dig out and toss. They sucker like crazy. ![]() |

For what it's worth in regards to Red Iholene turning ugly. I have one in shade and one in sun. The one planted in shade looks nice with dark green leaves and faint red underneath. The one in sun is bleached and looks terrible.

I have bananas growing in both full sun and up to 60% shade. If you want fruit plant in full sun. If it's grown as an ornamental, give it a little shade. Of course if it still looks great when grown in full sun then leave it there.

You know, I should have mentioned that your zone will have something to do with how the bananas do in full sun also. South Florida and south Louisiana turn into sweltering steam baths around August. The high heat and humidity combined with full sun take a toll on many of the plants around my house especially if I neglect to keep them watered. In cooler zones these same plants that may look their best in full sun. The good news is that most bananas transplant easily so you can try a few different spots to find out what works best in your zone for a particular banana.
