Winterize ice cream banana
Zone 8. Got into the low 30s last night and my plant looks rough.
Should I trim the leaves off or will they make It? Leaning towards digging it up and bringing it inside. I also have a portable greenhouse on order I could put over it next week, but the cold may kill it by then. And I haven't figured out how I'm heating it yet so that may have to wait until next year. I'm trying to give it a head start so that maybe it will eventually fruit, rather than cut it back. |

Re: Winterize ice cream banana
That one is pretty small. I would pot it up and put it in a southern window where it gets plenty of light and decent temps. It might not grow too much but it would have a quicker start when replanted in the yard in the Spring. Be sparing on the water if potted.
I pulled a couple small ones out and just threw them in a wheel barrow in the garage bareroot for about three months last winter. No water, no nothing. Replanted in the yard in March. They were slow to start growing again. I got a flower this week but too late. They did produce some nice June pups which I expect to flower next season if they make it through the winter in the yard. |

Thanks. You think I should trim the leaves or could they make it?

Re: Winterize ice cream banana
Pretty sure the leaves are fried. A lot of people cut the leaves off when transplanting pups but I would leave them on while repotting not to increase the plant shock. Cut them off after they turn brown and dry up. Don't worry about the leaves too much. Main thing is to keep the pstem, corn and roots alive.

Re: Winterize ice cream banana
There are several plants sold as "Ice Cream". Although sellers would like you to believe otherwise, all of them are dead in a zone 8 winter.

Re: Winterize ice cream banana
Got it from fast growing trees if that's any indication of what it is. They say it grows in zone 8 but I imagine they mean that it should come back every year.
I planted it in March of last year and it died to the ground after unexpected freezing. Came back when it warmed up. I might be better off potting it than replanting it. Any idea what size pot would allow it to bear fruit? |

Re: Winterize ice cream banana
leaves are dead, cut em they are no use to the plant no mo. less you leave it outside and they can give it warmth for the next freeze.

Re: Winterize ice cream banana
That looks completely different from the "Ice Cream" I got from my local reputable nursery. Both plants in the photo were suckers off of the same (dead) mother plant that I bought, but one went into the ground in April, and the other stayed in pots to bring inside through winter.
