Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
The "sibling pup" will probably live, but with my experience, one like that top one will not. Remember, ALWAYS cut towards the mother...always. I'm sure someone will chime in with a diagram of some sort.
Great to hear from you, Gina. I just remembered I haven't replied to your email you sent some time ago :ha:. Sorry, I will get on that. Taylor |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Also, next time, wait until they are a bit bigger and more rooted.
|
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
You could try potting it in pure peat and see if it grows some roots. Just a quick sprinkling of water, then wait. Good luck, but as Taylor said, it is not likely to make it, but never give up!!!!

Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
I've had worse off plants root fine, though they may take longer. In my experience, actually having roots on the pup is not very important, whats more important is that its old enough to be able to make more roots (since it can't very well use the ones you just ripped out of the ground, it has to grow new ones anyways. Plus, bare-rooting suckers is common practice and will not kill the plant). Never give up on a banana plant, better to let it sit for months if you really want the variety than to toss it because you think its dead. Keep whatever its potted in slightly moist and in a warm location, it may surprise you.

Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Ditto, don't give up. Keep the potting soil moist, not soggy, and give it some time. You have nothing to lose in trying. Most suckers that I thought were questionable or too damaged when I removed them ended up being just fine.

I like the duck. I gotta have one!

Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Just curious....
When I root a citrus cutting I put it pot and all in a ziploc baggie to boost the humidity and keep it out of direct light.. should I provide same for this nanner pup?? any other tips to help boost the survival rate would be great!! Gina *BabyBlue* |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Gina:
This is just my opinion I'm not an expert by any means. In citrus, cuttings have woody parts but in bananas their tissues are all soft. So bananas are susceptible to rot very easily. So I'll keep it on the dry side. |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Thanks Benny!! I was wondering about that... I will skip the baggie..
Chironex.. the ducks was purchased some 15 or so yrs ago in a "ducky" package.. there was ducky drink cup, soap dish, tooth brush holder, wash cloth, thermometer (to check bath water temps) and a couple other ducky things I can't remember now.. As the brush was made for washing baby parts I thought it soft enough to was baby nanner parts.. Hubby thinks I just like to baby every thing.. lol I think I got it at K-mart.. but don't quote me on that.. though by now I doubt they carry such fantastic packages.. shame the nanner pup didn't giggle like my 4 kids did watching the duckies float around the tub.. :bebe: Thanks for all the input to help my baby nanner!!! Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
BTW Gina I separated a Cal Gold pup a week ago and it's huge over 21/2 feet in height and had at least 5 true leaves over a foot long. maybe 10 times bigger than you have so I was so confident that it will have a bunch of roots. So I dug around the pup taking care of not breaking many roots around. So when I finally cut the umbilical cord and carefully lift the pup from the ground, NOT a single root was attached to the pup. It was as clean as your pup.
I cut many pups from its moms before and each one of them were full of roots irregardless of height. But this CG is very unique. I will be very careful next time when l do this again. It is an eye opener. But what I did was cut all the leaves including the sword leaf and planted it anyway .It has sprouted about 2 inches now and I think it is going to be alright. |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Benny,
I thought I had a real nice angle when I separated the pups.. I would have waited to separate till the smaller one was bigger But I knew I was running out of time before momma was going to need to be dug up.. But I don't know that the wait would have netted me any roots.. I thought it is a bit strange that the roots for the "sibling" pup were growing up.. This is the first separation in ground I've ever done.. I've cheated before and divided out pups with roots as I repotted a momma.. it is super easy to make the right angle cut and not cut when there are no roots for the pup when there is no dirt in the way..... I hope momma stays as healthy planted in a pot this winter as she did last winter... Maybe fruit next year!!?? gonna be TOO tall to move in and out after this.. will be scraping the ceiling if it grows more than a foot and half over winter as it is.. I hope that since it's already been a half a month since I made the cut and it doesn't look any worse for it... and the nice callous will prevent rot there.. It WILL live!!! Sounds good any way!!!! :) Nothing lost for trying to save it any way.. Gina *BabyBlue* |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Gina right at front center is the cal gold I was talking about, one without the leaves. I transferred it last 9 6 08. It is the same height and age as the one on the left. It is now shooting some leaf about 1 1/2 inches. But I don't believe it has some roots until maybe later when the growth will be constant. CG is known to be a very sssslllloooowwww grower. |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
A slow grower? It's all in the conditions Benny, I have ~15 CG and 2 that have gone from <1 foot to over 7 feet this year. Very fast...for me.
Sorry, thought I should chime in so people don't get the solid impression. |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
You are right Taylor.
If you live in a place that the tempt is above 80 degrees and above 70 degrees at night, then your CG will shoot straight up. I am talking about my experience with this plant and I live where the tempts at night is on low 50's and low 70's during the day. Joe Real gave me a a dwarf Brazilian which is just now showing some flowers last year yet his which was a pup of what he gave me already fruited and ripened at the start of the summer. His summer has some over 100 degrees during daytime I think Gina's CG is a slow grower too. My CG I had to wait 8 months before I saw its first new leaf when I transferred it to the ground. and over 2 years before it has its first pup. This is my experience. |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
I can't say fast or slow.. This is the longest I've had a Nanner plant.. I keep giving them away.. I bought a Basjoo and gave it as a present to my aunt in KC.. I bought An Ornata(not real sure on the spelling of it) and my son gave it as a present to a Girlfriends mom.. Only other I can compare it to is my truly tiny and little prince.. if I go by them.. WOW CG grows fast!! LOL
This is the CG I got from Joe not too long before I transplanted it to inside and removed the pups.. Here it is Aug 29 Last yr.. So that is a yrs growth here.. and I've had it about a yr and half now... You might be surprised to know that during summer it rarely gets that cool here.. 70s @ night is a cool night in summer here.. The hardest thing for my CG is that it has to be brought in during winter.. I will get it measured and see if I can't find my notes on it from last year.. to see how much it has grown.. Gina *BabyBlue* |
Re: Will Cali Gold pup Survive?
Come to think of it, my one CG is an exception. The other ones that I have are fast growing. But not a pupper. That's what I mean I guess.
I'll post pics soon. |
