Why are some bananas named like "SH3640"?

Hi

Can anyone explain me why? Most plants and bananas have latin scientific names but this password looking names get me puzzled.

They are Hybrids. "Man-made" crosses. Most I think are done at the Hondurus Research Station. JoeReal or some of the others who have put more time into researching this will most likely post in on the topic.

Wild plants are given latin names, such as Musa basjoo. Cultivars, are given cultivar names which can be anything, the FHIA organization that does many hybrids to try and produce new commercial cultivars and they are given names like that, such as 'FHIA-1' aka 'Goldfinger', 'FHIA-2', 'FHIA-18' etc... FHIA also produces other hyrbid plants with different names such as 'SH3006', 'SH3846', sometimes these are also written as 'FHIA-SH3006'
