Just wondering if who might have seen leaf sheaths pulling away en masse like this before? This is a Helen's Hybrid btw.



If you look closely at the tallest p-stem you should be able to notice how many of the big, mature leaf sheaths are pulling away. I have certainly seen this on occasion, mostly with smaller plants, but not this many at the same time

Here is a pic that give a little perspective on size of the plant. On the lower left of the base there is a boot for perspective.



The plant looks relatively healthy otherwise. I did recently over fertilize it, which could be contributory/cause, and I don't think it liked the heat wave we had a few weeks ago, but otherwise it seems to have mostly recovered and is putting out normal looking leaves again.

This is a pup that was in a pot for over a year and wasn't put in the ground until this spring and it didn't display this characteristic until now. I do have another pup from the same plant that was put in the ground at the same time and it has not started doing this. It still might, as it seemed to display more fertilizer damage than this one.

Any ideas?

Interesting, I only see this in my young plants and the older leaves when they start to brown.

My 1000 Fingers has really open petioles and all the old leaves do this when they start to brown. My guess it the open petioles don't 'grip' the pstem as well?

None of my plants do as much as the one in your picture though

Yeah, when I have seen this before it is in similar situations as you describe. The interesting thing on this plant is that the leaves are generally healthy
if not a little burned on the edges from our recent heat wave



and the sheaths are still rounded....in other words, its like they are still in grip mode, but just not enough.



When I try to push them back onto the plant, I have to spread them to get them around the p-stem....or course they don't stay, but they are definitely not flattened as I often see when this occurs in normal course.

The leaves/sheaths pull away from the pstem on the lower 1/3 of the plant regularly in my patch at some point. I’ve had three or four of them pull away and collapse simultaneously on different plants while floating in the pool. It was noisy and freaked me out the first time it happened. Usually after a big rain for me.

I have no idea for a scientific response .....but a few of my plants do the same thing.

My observation is ...the pstem grows larger/faster than the outside leaf......and the leaf pops off the swelling stem.

Consistent with over fertilization maybe? It has settled down now and seems to be growing normally (fast) again.
