Who is growing Namwah?

I have had these plants for 3 years now and they were sold to me as "Cambodian" bananas. Jon seems to think they may be Namwah because that's what the Cambodian people like to grow and eat. Every time one blooms I post pictures and ask the same question in hope of finding it's true identity. Please if you are growing Namwah post some pictures or PM me with pictures of the male flowers and the fruits plus any other info you might have on them. Thanks. :nanadrink:
Here is the male flowers:

The female flowers:

And the bunch as of this morning:

Mitchel, go to my gallery, page3, titled Fruit. There's some D.Namwah pics there, there's also some closer pics in the gallery somewhere, but I'm not sure where. I'm not home, and trying to view your pics through my Iphone. The screen is too small to really get a good look. If memory serves me, the female flowers on mine have more red than your's. Also, the way the fruit sets on the bunch is a little different. But I can't really tell from the view I have on the phone. Hope that helps some! Let me know what you figure out.

Thanks Brian, yours and Greenie's look similar to the others I have seen online. The fruits on mine are more angular, darker green and the female flowers have less red in them. I give up, this will be their last season in my garden. I have two that are blooming so I'll keep cutting the pups until the removal day. The fruits from these are great but I really don't want any unknowns growing here.

Mitchel,

It sounds like you may soon have some pups available. How tall does the p-stem get at your location?

Re: Who is growing Namwah?

Richard, the p-stem on the one pictured is 12.5 feet. The other one that is just blooming is 13.5 feet. They are pushing up lots of new of pups! You want one?

Here is a better pic of the male flowers.

And the fruits.

Oh darn, that's too tall for the area I'm working with. Great looking bananas though.

Well, if tis worth anything, in Chinatown all of the bananas called "Cambodian Banana" are indeed 'Namwah'. Do you have a picture of the mature bunch?

Re: Who is growing Namwah?

That's interesting Gabe. I don't recall taking pictures of the adult bunches but I certainly will get some pics this time around!

Interesting story about my acquisition of these plants. They came from the same place as my Reds and Tall Brazilians, only they were supposed to be "Cambodians" taken from the small plot of land that the local Cambodian Shaman rented from them. This place had quite a few managers come and go and these particular plants were not labeled so they may be something other then what the Shaman was growing, or it's also possible that the Shaman was growing something other then Namwah. The fruits do taste strikingly similar to my Brazillian/Hawaiian Apples so maybe they are Manzano. The size of the p-stems is smaller than then my Brazilians so I'm pretty sure that's not what they are. Thing is, I don't remember them ever having anything growing there other than Jamaican Reds, Hawaiian Apples, Ice Cream, Cardaba, Dwarf Cavendish, and whatever the Shaman was growing. But my Orinoco was one of the three plants sold to me as Cambodian so maybe these plants came from Charlie's house where he grew some different ones than what they grew at the nursery.

BTW, I have never distributed any of them due to not knowing what they are. This is the major reason for wanting to either ID them or junk them.

EDIT: Just to be clear, Charlie is the owner of the nursery.

Mitchel, why would you want to junk them? They look beatiful. Do you not have enough room for them if their not a Cambodian 'Namwah' banana?:baloonnaner:

For two reasons. I pot up pups and sell them once they have rooted during the summer months for extra beer money so I need to know what I'm selling.

And two, it's hard to trade unknowns because not many people want them.

And there is even a 3rd answer! We seem to be having more and more unpredictable weather and these guys don't look so great after 80mph gusts of wind. If I grow something shorter they will have some wind protection from the houses on either side.

Mitchel,

Those are understandable reasons. Especially the beer reason...LOL!!!:doggyandnaner:

Re: Who is growing Namwah?

Mitchel,

If they are like my Manzano they should be more slender than Brazilian and just as tall or taller. They are right on there with Brazilian and Saba for height. Fruit tends to be smaller, and it pups quite a bit.

you do know that instead of junking the nanas, you could donate them to the nearest elemantary school. this could be part of their earth sciences projects. just a thought...

Re: Who is growing Namwah?

Dan and Dean, I'll pm you.

Mskitty, I have a few people who buy pups from me for school garden projects. If I see them this year I'll offer them the corms. Funny thing is the place where my first bananas came from is a non profit that helps schools set up organic gardens and finds empty plots of land turning them into community gardens where the poor can learn how to grow food. What comes around goes around!
