When to repot

I have a Mysore that is about 8 foot tall from the top of the soil to the highest leaf and is in a 20 inch pot with 3 good sized pups. Our summer has been cold this year and it is slow in growing. How do you know when to repot?

Where are you located? Is there any possibility of growing it in the ground?

Move it to a 60" pot.

I live in WA state and it would not survive our winters. I suppose I could put it in the ground and then take it out in the fall and store in the garage.
I noticed though that my black thai that is in the ground it growing at a much slower pace than my potted black thai. I am thinking it is because our spring and summer has been unseasonably cool and the ground has not warmed up enough for faster growth. Just not a good year to grow tropicals.

Well, unless you can put it in a very very large container, and indoors in a very bright, high ceilinged area, then there really isn't a good chance of it getting to act like a normal 'Mysore'. If you have an area indoors with bright light and about a 10ft ceiling, you might get it to fruit in a stunted manner in a few years. Normally 'Mysore' is a very large plant, but bananas can be stunted by growing them in a container. If you put it in a container approximately 20-24" across and deep, it will stay shorter (but still get pretty tall) and will probably make a little bunch of bananas one day if you can keep it alive.

Really for growing for fruit in areas like yours, dwarf varieties in containers are best. If you are not concerned about fruit, just put it in whatever size container you want or leave it in the one its in and enjoy it as a nice plant. Bananas can stay in small containers for a long time, they will just stay small. The size of the container dictates the size of the plant.

I am not interested in getting fruit from my Mysore. I bought it for size alone.
I have had it for about 3 years...it started as a 12 inch plant. Last year I took one of the pups out and potted it up separate and it now is almost as tall as the mother plant. I store it in the garage in it's pot in the winter but since it is getting taller now I might have to pull it out of the pot and store it laying down. I do have other bananas like ice cream, saba, black thai, california gold, apple and a regular and red variety of cavendish and a basjoo.

With a lot of plants, the ones in the ground are busy sending out root growth prior to growing the topside. Potted plants are pretty much done with root system expansion earlier & then the tops grow, making foliage growth much more noticeable.
There's a lot to be said for having cold feet though, I can relate!
