When to plant in ground?
Hi, I live in Florida and it looks like the cold weather is over, as lows are in upper 60s with highs I mid 80s already. Six of my plants were bought in November as Tc plantlets. They are all in 4 or 6 inch pots. There are no roots out of the bottom holes yet, so is it too soon to plant in the ground? Some of them only have 2 or 3 leaves.

Re: When to plant in ground?
you could take the chance where you are, but I wouldn't. I am up in ne fl. unless you have a good way to heat and cover them.
I will admit its been nice but I have a couple of apple trees that pretty much always bloom in beginning of march and pretty much always we get frost that takes most of them out in the middle of march.

Re: When to plant in ground?
If you're in SW Fl I think you are safe to put them in the ground anytime now.
I'm in 9B and I've had the frost blankets removed a month ago.

I'm an hour south of Tampa. Generally a few degrees warmer here.

We are in Florida.....every day is a good day to plant stuff. The timing is debatable with the planting of tomatoes.. A good indicater of when to plant stuff in your area is to watch what to see what the big box stores are selling in your neighborhood. Another good indicater is to see what the local landscaping companys are planting.. Another good indication of when you should bring your stuff out is to check the .....extended weather forcast. Put the plant in the ground. I know from the first exchange we had was iffy.......but I grow a broad range of plants on a pro level and I want you to do also..... as well you/we can. We can make those small plant grow this year. Last edited by cincinnana : 02-16-2018 at 08:08 PM. |

Re: When to plant in ground?
For commercial planting, I don't plant between 10/15 and 2/15; Minimum plant height in a 1 gallon pot would be 30 cm from potting soil to the top leaf collar (the part where the rolled up leaf comes out of the plant)

Re: When to plant in ground?
You can plant any time. It is better to plant when weather is warm enough to encourage active growth because those conditions also promote active root growth. Having said that, I have moved plants in January and February in San Diego without problem. When weather is colder, it is important to not over-water transplanted plants.

I understand it made it down to 46 in Miami. totally lost 1 namwa. it's pup died when the noreasters came. even lost a few pups from some of my other mats. after the 3 noreasters I figured I was pretty much safe, so I planted a blue java and 2 iholenas. I had 3 garbage cans to cover them with if it did get cold. 4th noreaster, the garbage cans did well but I lost some leaves. they are doing fine. got 7 more to go in the ground. among them praying hands, goldfinger, fhia 17 and the Pisang Ceylon I got from hmelendez's magical orchard. 2nd day into tolerable cold and 3 days from april. I have seen freeze in april. what to do what to do. I am going to do some more planting I what I am going to do. take the chance. kernana I hope your plants are ok.

Re: When to plant in ground?
Yeah Beam, my plants are still doing ok. I'll wait until April to plant in ground even though it is probably safe right now even. It could still freeze in April but those chances are pretty low and by then its worth the risk.

Re: When to plant in ground?
very glad to hear it. if they are doing good in pots it might not be worth the risk. but where you are you should be ok now. freezes in florida in april is very very rare. course anybody who tries to forecast the weather in florida is either a yankee or a fool, as the last 3 months has demonstrated. but that could be applied in most parts of the word I guess. since you don't have a couple hundred plants to sacrifice conservative is the best policy.
break a p-stem. [means luck]
