Default What's the most wind resistant banana variety?

Doesn't have to have edible fruits. I just want to plant one in front of the house. So, the more capable the leaves are against the wind the better.

Thanks,

SDC has been good for me. 1) it's short and 2) it has very thick/leathery leaves.

Little Prince and Raja Puri are both very wind resistant.

I have icecream, raja and DC's(namwah) and the Dc's seem to be a bit heavier and sturdier than the other 2. They still will tear in a very high wind but not like the others.

Musella seems like it has really good wind resistance but the best of my bananas is probably from my Super dwarf cavendish. Musa basjoo is the worst for me. Strong will will really tatter the leaves, fortunately the winds have not been bad lately.

I had a storm come thru with 70 mph winds and I think all mine took it well. The Ice Cream being the tallest did great, and still is. Dc's took it good too.

I live in a wind tunnel everything I have gets shredded and broken.Dwarf orinoco is a good one for fruit, non fruit I would have to say Ensete Red Ensete on the right, kru, and rowe this is a 40 knot wind the Kru got uprooted.

You may want to Consider the Ensetes if producing edible bananas isn't the priority. E. Maurelii is short and stout at the base while still having huge ornamental leaves. For true bananas I'd pick Dwarf Nam Wah which develops a huge base of the psuedostem over time and should prove very resistant to toppling though the leaves will still shred during a major wind.

This is good to know. My Dwarf Orinoco has sure got beatten up by the wind since I planted it out in late May. I staked it, and good thing too, because I think it might have broken if I hadn't. The open prairie is not the best place for these types of plants! Maybe I'll try a Dwarf Cavendish and an Ensete Maurelii next year. Good to know that Musa basjoo wouldn't fare too well. I'd like to try one anyway, though.

The shorter the plant the less wind will hit it,that's for sure.
