What's going on with these dwarf red?

[IMG][/IMG]

Just noticed them looking weird. It's like the leaves are going more arrow shaped than typical banana, plus the yellow/brown edges.

We have had very hot days and a lot of extra rain. I have fertilized them with the banana fertilizer AND given them the kelp stuff and the fish emulision stuff, but that was not very recent. Perhaps 4-6 weeks ago even?

Should I be concerned? Is it mutating to a space monster? Is it turning into ginger? Or is it just making me tear out my hair for no reason?

Wolfyhound,

Banana leaf shape, venation texture etc - especially on young plants - respond to stress and shock in lots of different ways.

Most likely, this might be what you're seeing.

Stress and shock from it being hot? Or too much rain? One other dwarf looks a little like it but not so extreme.

So it'll be okay eventually? Just leave it alone?

Thanks so much for responding. It just looks weird! It's almost like the leaves changed shape overnight!

Hi, same thing happened to mine. I left it alone and just in the last couple days it produced a new leaf. I'm sure it will be fine.

Wolfyhound,

The leaves of young banana plants are very plastic. A simple thing like transplantation shock; or things like three days of overwatering or drought or heat or cold can change the shape and other aspects of the emerging leaves. The response to adverse (or favourable!) conditions is very swift -bananas are herbaceous plants! And as young plants tend to produce leaves in more rapid succession than mature plants, the change is very noticeable.

The necrotic spots on the leaf would be often due to opportunistic microbes taking advantage of a compromised leaf blade.

It appears that it died back from winter cold. I know red bananas are extremely cold sensitive. Perhaps it's unable to completely recover from the winter?

It did die during last winter, but it's had all summer to recover and looked fine until very recently. None of my planted bananas did very well with the one or two hard freezes that hit them.

They kind of look like water suckers.

Someone else said that too. It's what came up after the cold killed them down. Should I have cut them all down or something? I just figured new shoots came up, yay banana plants! Never even though about what sort of shoots they were.
