The real deal Musa Ice Cream aka Blue Java! This is the third bunch forming on my Mat, I still haven't had the opportunity to taste this variety. Hopefully the first bunch, which is 10 months old, will mature very soon! Photos taken 6/11/18:

update on the Musa Aeae bunch that flowered in February 2018-it survived!!!! This was very unexpected, the fingers got burnt on the "sunny side" (not very visible in the pic) but it was just on the exterior...I thought they were gonners! To recap, we had an abnormal heat wave here in the San Francisco Bay Area in February 2018, which forced this plant to bloom. Afterwards, we had 2+ months of cold, rainy weather (lows in the 30's,40's, highs in the 50's) with a few warm days sprinkled in. No idea how this thing survived: the cold weather "burnt" most of the leaves away, and now there are 3 stubs with barely any solar panel action left! However, somehow, the fingers keep filling in and it looks like they will eventually reach maturity!

Photo taken 6/18/18

And this pic below is a little late for the show, but FHIA-1 American Goldfinger bunch forming. I have 6 bunches of american goldfinger developing right now on 2 Mats, but the leaves on many of these p-stems are pretty shot from the cold. This variant seem less cold hardy than dwarf brazilian and raja puri, but it could be that the shorter varieties don't get as damaged since the wall they are planted next to protect them better. The tallest pstem of FHIA-1 American Goldfinger seems to be about 16' high, so many of its "limbs" are taller than the wall and therefore exposed to zero winter protection:

Another American goldfinger FHIA-1 bunch, this one bloomed mid October of 2017 and is probably a month away from maturity (hopefully!). The leaves on this p-stem are mostly brown from the cold, but there's probably enough left to finish the job:

Musa Pisang Ceylon fruiting here outdoors in Northern California! The inflorescence was wedged between the stair rails, so it was hard to get a photo right when it bloomed. As the p-stem bent a little bit a week or two later, I was finally able to snap some pics. Photos taken 7/2/18:

male flowers:

the p-stems on this plant lean a lot, much like musa Ice Cream. It seems like they might fall over if it's too windy! They definitely need propping, although I have the plants growing wedged between the wall of a house and a cement retaining wall, which seems to form a "cage" around the plant and keeps it from falling over:

A mystery banana given to me from a farm on the opposite side of the island. Was suspected originally to be KM5, but who knows what it is.

Rob-do you suspect that it's Yangambi KM-5? (ie. is that the same thing as KM5?)

Hard to tell what the plant looks like overall from that photo, but it doesn't look like Yangambi KM5 to me. KM5 is very vertical in growth form (no drooping leaves) and when the bud emerges it initially grows completely horizontal (i.e., perpendicular to the p-stem).

A new rajapuri bloom, photos taken 7/18/18:

New rajapuri inflorescence to the left, and an older bunch of Rajapuri to the right that bloomed Feb. 2018. Looks like the older bunch might be ready in a month or so, which would be record timing up here LOL yeah, 7 months is fast for us! I have a blue java that bloomed Aug. 11th, 2017 and it's still not ready (a little over 11 months now!)

No. The person who brought the keiki to me thought it might be, but then realized it probably wasn't. The original owner didn't know what it was. Another Goldfinger off-type?

I won't have to put this one in the basement this fall. Some day I'll get a bloom before the last week of July.
