Another one of them variegated bananas.

We were very lucky to have pruned all of the leaves on our bananas prior to hurricane Maria, 200 mph winds can do a lot of damage. When I see all the farms around me that were just destroyed it sure feels like it was a good decision not to be another victim. Amazingly we didn't have any bananas get bent or crash to the ground and this was the worst storm in 500 years to hit our area.

FYI...
Our internet service is becoming more reliable and we do have potable water now. What's really great is the government is ahead of schedule on restoring electricty to our area and should have power in May.

That's amazing - a little preventative maintenance really paid off for the banana farm! Glad to hear you have stable internets and power coming in just a few short months.

I can imagine that generators or solar panels are in hot demand since people want to charge laptops and phones.

Yeah pruning works all the time and I'm sure everyone in Florida did the same thing to prepare for hurricane Irma.

I'll let the group know when power is restored, I asked my neighbors to keep me updated so I know when to stop feeling sorry for them. It's gotta be inconvenient to be without electricity. Generator prices are crazy now, up about 400%. We were very lucky that city power never reach the top of the mountain so we decided to produce and store our own power. It's good to be lucky.

After the island lost power from hurricane Irma many neighbors wanted to learn more about producing electricity and I responded with "buy batteries", two weeks later 'Hello Hurricane Maria'. Producing electricity is cheap and easy but storage is what makes it convenient, you certainly can't run a portable generator for 7,000 hours, that's about 5,000 gallons of fuel.

We've been very lucky to produce huge bunches of bananas for many decades without ever using chemical fertilizers.
Top mulch has always provided more than enough nutrients to produce perfect bunches.

Removed this sucker yesterday to improve the fruit filling phase.

Kandrian flowering after 20 months. Fell over a few times and I'm amazed it's even flowering.

Musa Aeae is blooming! Haven't heard of anyone else getting this far with this clone outdoors in Northern California-does anyone know if others have been able to produce mature fruit in this area?

We had an abnormally warm early february: temps near the 80's, which is unheard of around here! The weather has since changed and it's near freezing every night! No idea if these bananas will make it...probably not, but somehow, the flower bud survived the cold december and January, so maybe there's a chance:

Congrats man! Amazing pictures as always! Made me sick to cut my AEAE and find a flower inside! It was right at 10’ so I knew it was close. Gonna push it harder this year. Doubt it will produce fruit but hopefully be able to see some variegated fingers. Awesome Job!!

It's cold, rainy, windy, and snowing in the nearby mountains. Some of the fingers have already been sunburned, and the leaves are brown at the edges. It's supposed to be cold and rainy for the foreseeable future, so it seems very unlikely these will make it.

It's been rainy and cold for the past month or so with no warm days in sight for the near future. American Goldfinger last year bloomed in April, but the entire bunch rotted away. Now I have 1 that opened in late February, and 2 more bunches that will open in the next day or 2! Doesn't seem promising that they'll make it, but you never know. Pics taken 3/13/18. In the first picture, notice the developing bunch in the background, those bloomed mid October 2017, but I'm starting to see spots on a few. Another bunch (not pictured) bloomed a week after(around Oct 24th) and most of those rotted away unfortunately. fingers crossed at least one bunch makes it!

Interestingly enough, these bananas looked almost unscathed when we had cold yet dry conditions for a few months. A surprise heatwave in February woke up the plants and caused so many flowers to pop! Thing is, that heatwave was followed by a month of cold, wet rain and there's no warm days in the forecast. Here's what they look like a little more than a week ago, not as bad as previous years, so maybe some of these blooms will make it:

Got the flag coming out on my Brazilian... It was broken by Irma, frozen twice and frosted several times, in March no less but is sending out a flower anyway. With two small leaves and an even smaller pre flag being all the leaves it has, I hope I get to eat them. Then again, my 3640 is still filling without any leaves since early Jan...

I know they will make it if they make... It will likely be a small bunch though. In warmer weather Brazilian still take 5 months or more, so they ill be ready to get blown down by the next hurricane in Sept. The way things go for me, Y'all buckle up for a June storm to blow it over before they are filled enough... Thanks, Hector.

You could try this on your Brazilian ... Enhancing bunch size of Banana through feeding N and K through distal end of rachis: ~ Tissue Culture Banana ... i don't think you would have any thing to lose even if the procedure doesn't work. The procedure was referenced in another thread.

I went down to measure a extra dwarf pisang awak this morning and walked past a bunch of florida, patupi, and veinte cohol blooming, also a kirkirnan and katual vunalir.

We've been working on the southern part of the farm and missed the bud emergence on these plants.

Blooming height on the extra dwarf was 38" (3' 2") with 8 hands so far.
