What are symptoms of overwatering?

I live in north Florida, and it's been hot & rainy, but sometimes it's hard to tell how much rain has really fallen, so I water occasionally also. I have LOTS of lower leaves falling flat against the stalk, as in they bend right where they join the stalk and hang straight down. I have several mats of different (very large growing) species and it's the same with all of them. The leaves seem fine right before the structural failure, no yellowing etc. I am not cutting them, even though I can't see how there's any vessels still intact to allow the stalk to resorb stuff from the leaf what with the obvious kinking where the bend is.

Is lower leaf drop a sign of overwatering? Underwatering?

What gives?

Don't know what causes this problem - I have it with the oldest leaves on my ice cream only, and I just cut them off. Doesn't happen with any other variety so can't help you there. Anyone???

I had that happen to two new leaves on my Saba just recently. The old established leaves were ok so don't know if mine is the same problem as yours. As soon as it unfurled it dropped with a seemingly weak area right at the base near the stem. The two leaves it happened to were one after the other. I came to the conclusion from digging around threads here that overwatering could be the culprit so backed off on it abit and so far no more problems.
