What kind of banana is this?

Hello folks,

Today I bought my first banana plant but it looks kinda odd with redish spots, what kind of banana is this or is it some kind of mutant? :ha:

Here is a picture:

Also a second question for you experts, at the bottom of the plant I see many off-shoots growing. Is it possible to separate them and what is the best method to do so and should I wait till they get a little bit bigger?

Hi, from the looks it seems to be Dwarf Cavendish, in which case the spots are just a reuslt of genetics.
There has been a thread for removing pups from your plants, but as you see, that pups are still too small, I would wait, until they have had at least 5 fully open leaves and then proceed.
Good luck growing.

They have told me it was very hardy but they couldn't give me a latin name. Perhaps it is a mountainous region type of musa?

Looks like the Hawaian plantain or breadfruit banana.. But one thing I can tell you for sure... offshoots that are that weak will not prosper when removed from the main root. It is necessary for this plant to have plenty of space to send out its offshoots strong. A good off shoot will be thick at the bottom and have beginner leaves for about a month a half min. before regular leaves start sprouting. you should, however remove it in order to allow the parent to be stronger...offshoots will feed off the mother and weaken it when not in a strong environment. I hope you will be able to replant as soon as possible and you will see great results... Also you may want to use banana and plantain food 10-5-20-3 (Nitrogen 10, Phosphate 5, Potasium 20, and Magnesium 3) Good luck:bananas_b
