What Florida Animal Is Diggin Up My Yard !

Hello Gang;

Everytime That I Inspect My Front & Rear Yards , I see Small & Large Holes all over the place .

I leave The Front & Back Yard Lights On all night , To see if it keeps away that animal , but it does not work , & The Lil Sucker is allusive .

Any one here living in florida has this problem ?
If So What animal is it & how to get rid of it ! ..

If it is a small or large hole that looks like the picture above, then it is a gopher tortoise, which is endangered. Not easy to get rid of (legally), you will likely have to call government authorities in to help you.

armadillo.. most likely..just keeping pests out of your yard..grubs beetles a worm once and a while..i think they do more good than harm..try predator urine from sport good store..hair from barber in net bag..but that big hole might also be a tortoise, protected in florida gopher tortoise will be sleeping on and off this time of year..armadillo and tortoise do share homes

I would say it was my dogs, but you don't live near me, and they are kept in the fenced yard (so all the digging is in my yard).
I would suspect the armadillo also. But squirrels have been pretty busy digging in my potted plants and other places this time of year.

I'd say it could be both.. Armadillo's suck.. neighbor had a dead one in the yard someone stuck a beer bottle in its hands, looked like it was getting drunk laying on its back.. Can you say Redneck.. lol.. :^)

Only two choices, if it is the common small shallow holes we often see in South Florida--Armadillo or Opossum ('possum).

I especially notice them after I clear an area and put down heavy cypress mulch. Can't see as they harm anything. It only happens at night so I haven't seen the critters either.

The hole from the photo looks a a gopher turtle hole. I have the little suckers on my farm. It's against the law to kill them. and the hole are really deep. I tried filling them back in, only to find the next morning that the holes were open again. If there is a lot of dirt on one side of the hole. I bet its a gopher turtle.Try and watch for them. Catch them and relocate them.

The holes in the picture (posted by CountryBoy) are from gopher tortoise not armadillo. If you have GT your probably would have seen one by now moving about in the daytime, don't think they are nocturnal. If you can stick your arm way down the hole (but I WOULD NOT recommend that) then it is most likely a GT. Not recommend because the GT are not the only thing that might take up residence and share a GT burrow .
If they are just shallow holes, then prob the armadillo, good thing about them is they tend to be wanderers and will most likely move on.
Of course you could also have wild hogs roaming around, but unless your entire yard is torn up, I doubt they are the culprit. You would also see the cloven hoof tracks.

We are in the country and are visited by a variety of critters - Armadillos dig in my compost heap nightly (saves me the work turning) and also damage the lawn but the holes are small like digging with a small spade.
Relocation might work if you can trap them - I tried that with racoons -my wife started feeding them (bread, apples, etc) when we first moved to the country -they were having a racoon convention every night and then they added our ducks to the menu. I trapped them in wire cages and hauled them several miles across the river - painted a couple of their tails for ID purposes but they returned til the ducks ran out.
What we call (box turtles) burrow -their holes are about volley ball size or smaller and quite deep but they are not in the open - they prefer to burrow under bushes and trees. The Turtles are napping now but we see many in warm weather - they like to raid my garden and eat lower hanging figs. Boy - Glad I haven't made that turtle stew I was thinking about. :ha:
