Musella lasiocarpa produces tons of pups each year. I started with two plants just one or two years ago and now have dozens! I divided two large clumps of this plant earlier this spring and sold some nice babies to folks on this message board. I bet they are doing well because I threw some extra pups under the deck earlier this spring; they all rooted and are growing nicely without any care! Even the pups that just had a sliver of corm!!!
I've decided that I'm going to plant the rest of the pups at school tomorrow because they are too old to mail and sell. What do you guys do with your extra musella pups?

In France I just started to cut the pups down as they came up. I like the look of a large single stemmed Musella better than the mess of a mass of pups. I'm pot growing a Musella with a lot of pups this year for some spares but next year after the spares are taken off it's back to chopping pups for me.So for me , after I figure I have enough Musella , like two or three , it's chopping time until I need more spares.
You could always see idf a local nursery would give you a couple of bucks for them or donate them to a School Fair to help raise money, that sort of thing. Good Luck Steve

thats a great idea, donate it to the school beautification projects. it teaches the kids ( and parents) about the different types of bananas that grow across the world. awesome idea!

I've read that in China they are used as pig food. So I guess it's time to buy you some pigs son!! Wouldn't that be terrible...to feed your prized Musella to your hogs?! I guess that goes to show that what is an ornamental to some is used as fodder for those who are aren't as well off. I grew up on a hog farm and I can't imagine feeding my bananas to the hogs!

Honestly, I have not had such great luck with mine as of yet. Maybe you need to donate one of your pups to me to try. You know it would be well cared for... If interested email me and maybe we can work something out...

i didnt think that the musella would pup like it does. i wacked 3 off the mom the 1st of may and i now have 5-7 pups on the mom again. i also have a pup on one that i wacked off. so i might get ahold of the science teacher at the either the middle school or the high school and see if they want one for the class room. if they dont then ill get ahold of the garden society of white county and see if i cant get the tropical bug going here. lol.

you can plant them in the forest, maybe they survive the winter and then you have a wild musella population!

Randy, I have one large pup left now. I planted the rest of them at school today. All together, I planted 7 large pups. It's kind of hot now with little rainfall. The area has some irrigation so we'll see how they do the rest of the summer. Hopefully, they will all make it.
