I only got my D Orinocos 4 years ago from Agristarts and have been trying to expose them slowly to the elements here. Out of the original 72 plugs, only 12 - 15 are surviving, not including the ones I gave away. Because of the last 2 winters they have been going in and out of dormancy and now are only anywhere from 8 to 14 inches tall, and they are in 14' tall citrus cans. In the next few weeks, I will transfer most of them in bigger pots, but the strongest ones, I'll plant in the ground as soon as the ground warms up (I bet you it's still in the 30s). I had a Raja Puri in a 50 gallon pot outside that grew to 5 feet last summer, but it succumed to the weather last winter, inspite of being in a plastic mini greenhouse and heater in it. The CA Gold, I got it from Joe R. last June with a D.Brazilian, and they traveled with us back to Seattle, then to Las Vegas (we were staying in hotels for 3 months) then back to Seattle again. Both of them stayed in a cool greenhouse together with several other varieties of bananas plus other plants. Of the two, only the CA Gold survived. It has been a big challenge so far, but I think I'm gaining some inroads. Another problem I've had is that my work has taken me all over the country for months on end, except for 4 or 5 days of R&R every 35 to 45 days. This alone wreck considerable havoc on my plants. One of these days, I may just post a picture of a banana in bloom. When you get back here in Seattle, hopefully my home improvements will be complete and I can welcome you and the other 4 members that are in the Seattle area for a get-together. Otherwise, let's just get together somewhere near. |

Thanks for all the info. I am close to Savannah GA. Will have a greenhouse by winter but dont expect to have a lot of heat in it. So I may have to bring them inside. I will try some hardier ones.

It sure is! Plus my partner and I are well known throughout the commercial industry so there is no shortage of business nor is there much competition - between the two of us we have about 50 years of academic/research (both floriculture & horticulture), consulting, and TC experience. We started out specializing in hard to grow and difficult to propagate plants but grew as we were asked to grow a wider variety of crops. It sure beats fighting for grant money!
I taught at NU for 15 years and watched the baseball program grow with Coach Van Horn, now at Arkansas. I think Coach Anderson was a great hire and is doing a great job. I'm sorry to say I have not been following the Husker team this spring. Hope your nephew is having a good year. |

I only seem to know the common names so I'll have to learn the proper ones....this week I have planted 2 caster beans; several cannas; pampas grass; numerous vines; 5 hibiscus.......I'm trying to turn our backyards into the tropics. Last week I planted several dept store bananas, but I've ordered some cold hardy ones I'm anxious to receive.

Over the past few weeks I have gotten most everything in the ground or potted up..LOL this is sooo sad ..today I stumbled across several croms that didn't fair to well over the Winter and the tags were gone but had pups waiting to sprout... SOOO I potted up a Rojo and 6 NOIDS...The GF has already put out 2 pups one is a couple of feet..Our weather has been so weird hot and cold cold and hot.. We must be over that coz it is just HOT.. dry as a bone except for the humidity...LOL.. Most of them seem to be in slooowmo...
Glad to see that everyone has gotten so much done ..I guess I better get on the ball...LOL Kylie |

Good Job Steve, and welcome Sharon. I put a basjoo in the ground by the pool and put another basjoo in a large container on the pool deck. I'm having a race to see who is bigger by the end of the year.

I actually planted these three weeks ago. They were shipped the day after they were dug up. The larger one is a TyTy Gold and the small one is a Dwarf Lady Finger.
TyTy Gold corm sprayed with fungicide: Potted TyTy Gold(large pot) and Dwarf Lady Finger (small pot): TyTy Gold: This picture of the TyTy Gold is from a link in the Encanto Farms website, which describes it as a short and stout plant. Naturally, when I saw the word short, I just had to have one. And NO, they're not from the infamous nursery in GA! Last edited by chong : 05-31-2008 at 07:21 PM. Reason: Added comments. |

Planted a 7g 'Thai Green' (some type of Cavendish) and a 7g 'Kofi' today. I got 5 or so 7 gallons to plant this week. Rainy season has started here in SW Fla. 2" of rain in the last 3 days. Doesn't really matter to the bananas since they are all on drip.
