you can send me any of those corms you are digging up LOL i wouldn't worry about the frost the ground is still warm and the ones you are keeping will recover this spring take care Pauly |
Re: Proposed new Sticky - What did you kill today?
Bananimal,
I feel your pain! My Goldfingers were the least resiliant cultivares in this latest freeze (22Jan09). The FHIA-3 held up as well as my Saba, with very little damage. I may get out my ladder tomorrow and take some pics. Best wishes, |
Re: Proposed new Sticky - What did you kill today?
Before it spins outta control maybe the title should be" What plants have you killed today"..Just a thought?
|
Re: Proposed new Sticky - What did you kill today?
Not to worry. The sites of the deleted naners will be taken up by the big potted pups that are in the garage nice and warm. They are the SH-3640, Logees Ladyfinger, Manzano, Pisang Klotek and Belle.
Jarred was right. If you are going to plant in the ground you gotta plant stuff that works, not cause it sounds good on some nursery website. Two years ago Terry - Tlturbo - told me I was located right on the edge of no return for growing naners, here in PSL, and 2 cold winters in the 4 years I'm here proved him right. BTW the Lula avocado, Duncan mango and the Jaboticaba came thru with no leaf damage. All of the deleted naner mats have pups, and they will be excavated and available to forum members when it gets alot warmer - like April/May. Dan |
Re: Proposed new Sticky - What did you kill today?
Please, no more tears guys. :0491::0491::0491: :0493::0493::0493:
I forgot to mention that the new rolled up leaves, the trunks and the short pups show no damage. Pretty sure all, or most, of my naners will grow out new leaves. None of the follow-on pups are close to flower, and that's good too. Time will tell. Everybody in South Fla and Calif pray for no more cold snaps!!! Hey Calloosamoosa --- let's see some of your pics. Also - why is your location pin in the sea, south of Sanibel island? lol Just checked mine - I put it in a retention pond next to I95 and Gatlin. About 4 miles from the house. Dan |
Re: What did you kill today?
Thread stuck! Brrr!
|
Re: What did you kill today?
I killed a Stevia bush by overwatering it during the last two weeks. Two others are doing fine though.
|
Re: What did you kill today?

Re: What did you kill today?
a spider, bermuda grass, some mushrooms growing out the bottom of an indoor potted plant, some of the most hated, god-forsaking, !@#$%$#@ gnats. i think thats about all i killed today......oh and i killed off about 4 pots of coffee!
|
Re: What did you kill today?
Well if mskitty can kill off 4 pots of coffee than I can say that I killed a gallon of sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet tea. I'm addicted to it. Do I need a 12 step program? LOL
Note to mediahound-don't pass out b/c I'm actually here, lol. |
Re: What did you kill today?
I think now I can say I have killed no bananas today!
Bananimal, I just uploaded some new pics, I think, that shows the freeze damage to FHIA-1, FHIA-2, Dwarf Nam Wa, Raja Puri, Red Iholena, SH-3640, Ice Cream, Zan Moreno, Kofi, and Brazilian Tall. As you have already noticed I'm not South of Sanibel, but I'm close enough to be warm for my Bananas and mangos. Best wishes!! |
Re: What did you kill today?
LOL one measly little Iochroma..
I checked the Banana's under the house... a bit blanced but looking healthy otherwise...the ones in the garage are still hanging in there and the few in the house are starting to put on new growth.. My AEAE broke dormancy and has put out it's first new leaf WOOHOO!!! I will try to get a pic up... Kylie |
Re: What did you kill today?
Two red-veined sorrel. Possibly due to fly larvae. I sprayed the rest with a pyrethrum.

Re: What did you kill today?
Scot,
I'm afraid to ask, this being winter and all, did you put that cow crap on your potted plants --- in the house??? How well rotted was it? Or wasn't it? Did anybody perhaps ask if you were using the new hillbilly version of "plug-it-in, plug-it-in" room deodorizer? Dan |
Re: What did you kill today?
Actually, I had just grabbed some mixed soil I had outside to fill a potted fern. Didn't remember that I mixed steer doogie in with it last fall. It really didn't have much of an odor, so I guess it had been fairly well composted. But the gnats, Yikes!

Re: What did you kill today?
Scot,
The gnatz tell it all. It was still ripe and stinky - to them anyway. Just moved my entire stock of potted plants back outside today. From the house and the garage with heater. Saw webs all over the quenepa - Spanish Lime - and the last remaining, still alive, ensette Maurelii from Sandy. Even the Key lime from Dave from the Gardenweb. The house in the winter is one big bug friendly growth environment - hot and dry - give us all a break!!! Looking forward to continued mild weather patterns - here in supposedly blamly So Fla. The latest 10 day forcast looks good. All of my cut down banana mats have fat, vigorous looking pups that will start accelerated growth in pace with the warming trend. April starts with megadoses of Vermicompost and regular watering. And this year the new Florida grape arbor starts with 3 year old vines - all of which have broken bud already. Everybody think warm - it's just around the corner - some corners being longer that others. NTWHIC! Dan Muscadines rule here, y'all!!! |
Re: What did you kill today?
I killed aphids. I looked close & saw them all over the tips of my brugmansias & then saw some at a few nana leaf tips. I blasted them with my shotgun.
Just kidding...I sprayed them w/ hot water & dawn dishsoap & will check tomorrow. I almost lost a 5 in 1 apple tree to them last summer! Dan, do you make wine w/ those grapes? I grow concord here ...good jelly & juice. This is the time to prune before they wake up. |
Re: What did you kill today?
I know this wasn't the intent of this thread, but I feel much better having killed this big rat in my shop than letting it eat up my baby Variegated wild Asian banana! To be honest, I killed this rat yesterday but since someone also killed the 'org, I couldn't get it posted. Glad to have the forum back! :D
|
Re: What did you kill today?
I'm with you there Harvey - kill those rodents. We have a constant battle to keep them out of the generator house and stop them gnawing the generator cables or making nests in there!! I practise goodwill to all living things except rats when they are in my patch. I have seen them eating coconut flesh in the campo and their coats would put a mink to shame, but I don't think there would be a big market for rat skin coats no matter what you renamed them!!
|
Re: What did you kill today?
Nice catch Harvey, and YES, very good to have the Org. back, I had computer trouble on monday, got that straightened out and then couldn't get back to the Org. untill now. Thanks Jarred for fixing the problem!! :bananas_b
|
Re: What did you kill today?
I bet I'm the only one in the 'org whose dad once shot a pistol in the house to get a rat! ;)
I didn't quite understand it at the time, but these things can be frustrating to get rid of. |

I've used a pellet gun in my pigeon coop. Dad used a .38 special. :)

Re: What did you kill today?
I have killed nothing today, but when I lived up North (Florida) I released two Elaphae obsoletta quadrivitatta (native yellow rats snakes) in my home when I had a problem with an endangered mouse species one winter in my house. Problem solved, they can go where cats cannot, and they don't shed fur. Red rat snakes work just as well or if in California Rosy Boas.
|
Re: What did you kill today?
Hey Caloosamusa - I would love to have that solution - I love snakes!!!
|
Re: What did you kill today?
I'm only vaguely familiar with The Epicrates species of the Dominican Republic.
They are Boas so not only birds(their primary prey) they should prey on rodents also. I am unfamiliar however with their temperment, and cannot say that they would make good house-mates. Someone locally there could give you better information. I'll ask a friend Dr. (herpetologist) and get back with you. They make life rough for those banana eating critters! Best wishes, Thanks Jarred for fixing the website!!!!! |
Re: What did you kill today?
My brother-in-law had a tenant that shot flies on the ceiling LOL. Bullet holes everywhere. He got evicted. He was a nut case.
Jarred, what was wrong with the org...what happened? |
Re: What did you kill today?
thanks jarred for fixing the org...i was having with drawls!

Re: What did you kill today?
FYI - discussion about the recent downtime should go to http://www.bananas.org/f5/sorry-abou...html#post63557. Sorry, I think I helped this thread go off-track with my rat post (which was OT enough as it was) by making reference to the downtime.

Re: What did you kill today?
A couple of caterpillars which were giving my new palm seedlings a hard time.
|
Re: What did you kill today?
Well Tog when I saw you posted to this thread I couldn't wait to see what exotic thing you had killed. I though maybe you took out one of them Long or Short Tail Macaques. Or maybe one of them wild boars you talk about. Or maybe a monitor lizard or two. But a couple of caterpillars? lol Harveyc got you beat with his rat!
|
Re: What did you kill today?
Hey Caloosamusa - the locals here all hate snakes even though there are no poisonous snakes on the island and try to kill them at every opportunity. When we were protecting what turned out to be a tree boa, we had 3 guys trying to kill it - they had already killed the other hatchlings/siblings. Very interesting was the way it worked it's way into the roots of the grass in the lawn (tropical grass is very deep) and disappeared from view.

Re: What did you kill today?
Island Cassie, we have the same problem with locals around here! I'm glad there are no native venomus snakes on your island. I'm also glad to hear you will not be posting on this thread about snakes you've killed!!! I've not seen Dr. A in a couple of days, hopfully by monday or tuesday.
Tog Tan!! I've not seen a pungi stick trap in a long time, they are a federal offense here, but Go for it!!!! Eat some pork ribs for me!!! Good hunting!!! Best wishes, |
Re: What did you kill today?
Caloomusa - I love snakes and have kept them in one way or another for many years - but not now. Great creatures!!
|
Re: What did you kill today?
Today I destroyed a brazilian pepper sprout (invasive exotic)!
Island Cassie, I just posted a picture of one of our venomous locals here in Florida. It is a pygmy Rattlesnake. It's the second one I've found on my bike route! I did not kill my venomous friend but did relocate it. Best wishes to all! :) |
Re: What did you kill today?
Today I smashed a mosquito that tried to come along for a ride in my van.
