![]() Jarred's post on carefull research and decision making before selecting naner cultivars to plant got me thinking. Decided to get rid of all the least cold tolerant naner mats - the Red and White Iholene. Also those most susceptible to wind damage, the tall ones - Saba and Pitogo.
Some of the remains of the above mentioned naners Here in PSL, Florida three cold nights in a row - low 30's -caused extensive leaf damage to all my planted naners. Potted pups went in the garage with a space heater. Patchy frost on cars Thurs AM Cold damage to leaves of both Goldfinger follow-on's Did a test -- before cold showed up -- Knoched a lower leaf of Dwarf Brazil to let it hang down. With no horizontal surface for frost to settle on, the whole leaf stayed green. Knoched but still attched DB leaf Dan |

![]() Bananimal,
I feel your pain! My Goldfingers were the least resiliant cultivares in this latest freeze (22Jan09). The FHIA-3 held up as well as my Saba, with very little damage. I may get out my ladder tomorrow and take some pics. Best wishes, Last edited by Caloosamusa : 01-23-2009 at 07:22 PM. Reason: Spelling |

![]() Not to worry. The sites of the deleted naners will be taken up by the big potted pups that are in the garage nice and warm. They are the SH-3640, Logees Ladyfinger, Manzano, Pisang Klotek and Belle.
Jarred was right. If you are going to plant in the ground you gotta plant stuff that works, not cause it sounds good on some nursery website. Two years ago Terry - Tlturbo - told me I was located right on the edge of no return for growing naners, here in PSL, and 2 cold winters in the 4 years I'm here proved him right. BTW the Lula avocado, Duncan mango and the Jaboticaba came thru with no leaf damage. All of the deleted naner mats have pups, and they will be excavated and available to forum members when it gets alot warmer - like April/May. Dan |

![]() Please, no more tears guys.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I forgot to mention that the new rolled up leaves, the trunks and the short pups show no damage. Pretty sure all, or most, of my naners will grow out new leaves. None of the follow-on pups are close to flower, and that's good too. Time will tell. Everybody in South Fla and Calif pray for no more cold snaps!!! Hey Calloosamoosa --- let's see some of your pics. Also - why is your location pin in the sea, south of Sanibel island? lol Just checked mine - I put it in a retention pond next to I95 and Gatlin. About 4 miles from the house. Dan |

![]() I think now I can say I have killed no bananas today!
Bananimal, I just uploaded some new pics, I think, that shows the freeze damage to FHIA-1, FHIA-2, Dwarf Nam Wa, Raja Puri, Red Iholena, SH-3640, Ice Cream, Zan Moreno, Kofi, and Brazilian Tall. As you have already noticed I'm not South of Sanibel, but I'm close enough to be warm for my Bananas and mangos. Best wishes!! |

![]() Two red-veined sorrel. Possibly due to fly larvae. I sprayed the rest with a pyrethrum.
