I'm reasonably sure I probably killed a bunch of ants yesterday when I pulled up a ?zebrina? that was looking sickly or dead and found a gazillion
?"bigheaded"? ants living underneath it.

I'm not sure if the ants had a hand in the plant's demise, or it was already on the way out when the ants moved in-or both.

I've found the same up here above you on the hill, longan and lychee are doing very well. The rambutan is dragging its feet. I'm inclined to think part of the problem is all the high winds we've had during the last year +. When I bought my first rambutan I was told that they did not like windy conditions. Between Iselle, the Kona wind and the other windy days, my poor rambutan has taken a beating. The only thing it has going for it is the fact that it puts out new growth at least 2X per year. They need to be protected from winds. I hope it will outgrow needing to be protected, otherwise it's doomed.

What have I been killing?
Ice Cream Bananas, by the dozens.
I transplanted a dozen pups from another location.
They like it there and are reproducing like weeds crowding each other and trying to spread into areas setup for other things to grow in. I have dug up all but 2 of the 12 original clumps and am digging up anything that pops up again.
It's like trying to clear invasives off the property, maybe even harder to do.

A friend down the road off the Red Road has a whole Rambutan farm, so they can definitely thrive here. He has the best rambutan I've had. My longan is 7 years old and has yet to flower, though it always looks happy. The Ele Ele I planted in its place turned out to be a Green Red that does very well!

After posting above, I have been looking at my rambutan again. It is really ratty looking. It is nearing another growth period. We'll see how it looks after it puts out some new leaves. But, Plant It Hawaii will be having their semi annual tree sale to the public in about a month or so. I think I'll go look to see if they have any rambutans available then. They seem to have the best quality grafted trees around the area.

Killed a couple more ice cream banana pups coming up where I dug the others out. They are persistent. I'll give them that.

Well sadly, one of the two plants from the basement that I planted was found yesterday laying on its side as if someone had shot it in the back. I thought it was going to survive as it had some purple and green color in the stem. I wonder if the corm has life in it. Should I dig it up and plant it in a pot and see if anything happens? The other plants is still standing straight up but I don't have much hope for that one either. Guess I didn't do a very good job of wintering them. Very sad.

I wish I could say I killed some worthless vermin, raccoon or possum, not sure which, maybe both... Soon, one way or the other.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

Sadly, all for of my plants I'm afraid as well as several pups. I'm seriously bummed. I knew it was a gamble though. Now to locate more and focus on container growing.

I am in the process of killing a beautiful rough tree fern unfortunately. Doing everything I can to save her. She's hanging on by a frond.

Well, I didn't actually kill anything - they were just ejected !

We had a lemon tree in the greenhouse for more than 10 years. Maybe 20. It grew well in the spring and summer but was severely 'cut back' by winter cold.

So, this spring I potted it up and put it in the kitchen. It grew REALLY well. Sadly, there were LOTS of Scale Insects on it. I tried removing them but to no avail. So much sticky 'honey dew' and black mold.

So I took the nuclear option - and cut the tree down a week ago so it is only about 6 inches tall - no leaves - just a little 'trunk'. One new shoot emerging now thank goodness.

I wish I had done this months ago.

Oh, the scale insects - they are in the middle of the garden still clinging to my lemon tree cutting. Gone forever from my lemon tree plant - I hope !
