For me, Tuu Gia has been the fastest to flower, but then takes consistently 5 months to harvest. In one case a new plant flowered in 6 months! It's become one of my most planted types and one I push when selling. It seems to be so hearty and produces pups like nothing else. I can put them in spots where previous bananas rotted away and they take off. In fact this bunch was from a plant put in a spot where a previous A'ea'e completely rotted after a couple years.

Flower in 6 months is awesome! Hopefully I will be able to try one soon. I have been unable to find a source the past couple years that I have been looking for one. Hopefully I will find one soon. I'm willing to buy or trade if anyone out there has one willing to send to TX.

Thanks again Rob. Your information and experiences is always very helpful.

Iholena "Nani" which is probably really a Lele or Kapua variant. These look more like Kapua in that they're more rounded.

I got another bunch of Brazilians, one year to the day from my first ones. What are the odds? 1 in 365 I guess...
Anyway, I believe they are ripening because of a critter munching on a couple about a week ago and the rot problem I had with two other bunches is doing it. As soon as they begin turning, they begin browning at the flower end and going bad rather than ripening normally. Whatever is causing it seems to enter through a wound and infect the fingers individually one at a time through the wound, then the stem of the bunch and into the fingers. There is a yellowish discoloration of the stem in the bunch on one side going from the wounded bananas to the first ripening bunch. I can tell it is the same thing that happened with the other two bunches and it seemed as if it spread up to the other bunches from the cut flower, but I did not cut the flower on this one as I suspected it was connected. Now I am more convinced. I do so wish I knew what it is and how to correct it as they don't ripen correctly so you must eat them as soon as they yellow or they rot. Inside the stem and PS are clear, free from any brown patches indicating disease of some sort. I am again, and still, stumped.
See below...

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

Nice bunch Steve. Congrats. I'm not sure what your issue is also. At least it didn't start on this one until they are ready. Don't cut those flowers! Research shows it doesn't matter anyway. Just make sure you have something to swat wasps with haha.

Goldfinger bunch just under 90 lb., harvested it very green as cooking bananas so it never reached it's full potential.
The fingers in the top few hands were 12 to 13 oz.

Impressive as always. Us mere mortals can only dream of growing bunches that big.

Kind of small Thousand Fingers bunch. Didn't heavily fertilize like I have for some larger bunches. Sandals are size 10 for reference. Most of the rack had fruit large enough to actually bother with.

Thanks V
That was the smallest bunch this year.
Didn't fertilize, like normal. Barrels are size 55.
Hydroponics works really well.

I was forced to harvest my banana bunch a month ahead of schedule because the stem broke at the "arm" where the spike came out of the pseudostem. This is the first time my banana produce the signature coloration of the Blue Java! The previous years, it only give me banana with typical green skin! Crazy how plants could change its fruiting over time. The fruit size are also about 2 - 3 times larger than the fruit I harvested before.

Jacq, if this happens again it would generally be better to still leave that rack in place. It will still get more developed by getting what it can from the top part of the pseudostem and may actually fill out slightly more. Hopefully yours will still eventually ripen and become edible. Not sure how long they take flower to fully mature where you are but they're 5-6 months in Hawaii. Mine that have broken under 4 months have never really become edible.

Thank you so much for letting me know! I will leave them on the next time this happens. My banana seem to take anywhere from 5-6 months to ripen also. There are a couple of them starting to show a little bit of yellow tint indoors.

But I might have to cook them up as tostones!
