They're in the same family so probably taste much the same. Hua Moa tend to have smaller bunches and some of the fruit are more massive. They do have that pithy core though, but shouldn't have seeds. I'm hoping these don't have that same core issue. Other Popoulus I've had lately, a couple Tongan types, didn't have pithy cores.

I didn't know what to call it, but I believe we are both speaking of the same core issue here. Other than the core issue, they were good when just yellow.

My first Monthan. 1 year to flower, 5 months to fruit. About 11 hands. Very odd banana. One of the worst I've had raw and ripe, but makes an excellent cooking banana. Rich taste when yellow, and very potato-like when less yellow.

I agree with the "odd banana" assessment for Monthan. I've met some folks who really like it as a ripe and raw "dessert" banana. I think it is OK that way, but it isn't one I look forward to eating out of hand. On the other hand, Rob, you like it cooked, but whenever I cook it, green or yellow, it's really astringent, which isn't the case for, say, Orinoco, which is very similar to Monthan in a lot of ways. Do you have any cooking tips?

They weren't astringent for me when cooked yellow but still firm. Steamed some and sautéed others in coconut oil with some garlic. Maybe just different due to climate. I thought it was better tasting and held up better to Bluggo types I've had at the same degree of ripeness.

Hi Banana People!

Here in Houston, we have had some cold (cold for us), and now some warm weather. My Bananas look to be starting to rot, so today I cut them, and hung them in the house. They look to be filled out as much as they are going to, and they are a little less green as they where 2, or 3 weeks ago.

Yes I know, it's a very small bunch, but for about 24 years, this Banana plant has been growing without me knowing much about it, and no help from me. The next growing season, I will be taking a lot better care, with regular watering, and fertilizing. Next time I post in this Topic, there will be more Bananas to Eat, and Share!

A small bunch of Pisang Ceylon is a very much appreciated different taste experience to all the Namwah bunches I have harvested lately.

Huti (Shumba Nyeelu)
Such a beautiful plant. About 14 months to fruit, and 4.5 to harvest. A bunch of these had already split. Got a taste of one that just split and was part ripe. Good so far and tangy! 8 hands.
Huti

Heh Banana growing friends,
First off a belated Happy and banana fruitful New Year 2017 !

Coming up on the anniversary, Jan. 20th of one year growing bananas. The first flower bloomed on my banana plant. Now the flower and bananas are visible and pushing further out each day.

Is there anything I need to do while fruit is setting?

How long does it take to harvest day? Are we talking days? weeks?

Lydie

No real need to do anything while fruit is setting and length to harvest depends greatly on what kind of banana it is. Veinte Cohol and SH 3640 only take 2-3 months to ripen, but Brazilians take more like 6 months. I think some take even longer.

Gros Michel
Gros Michel

A Mysore type described in Kepler & Rust as "Pisang Raja". It's a Mysore without BSV nor red undersides of leaves. Not quite as tangy as Mysore and produces bigger bunches and fruit.

Rob, it looks like your photo of 'FHIA-21' above is the 'Huti Shumba Nyelu', do you have a photo of your 'FHIA-21'?

Biggest bunch of Tu'u Gia yet, though only 25lbs. They have such odd shapes. In the 2nd picture, the bottom hand look quite different from the top hand. Obviously much smaller but also a different shape, especially with a nearly rounded end. They're about as tasty as a banana gets!

Nice Tuu Gia bunch. I want this variety so bad. Do they flower fast and ripen fast? USDA Tars had some fairly quick numbers on them. I'm sure they are as cold sensitive as they come but I still want them. Very cool how they are different sizes and shapes.
