![]() Emily , is it possible you have had some ant problems on the bananas? The "Growing Bananas" DVD from Scot Nelson covered just that sort of thing but I dont remember exactly what it was at the moment.
In any case the damage is only cosmetic and they look great.... and tasty too! ![]() |

![]() Mitchel, you will love them.
I have Misi Luki, SH3640, Zan Moreno and Wild Iholena to eat. Wild Iholena was labeled as White Iholena, but is some sort of Cavedish family banana that makes the biggest fruit of any Cavendish type banana I have.

![]() Mitchel, they sound tasty. Do they have any of that pronounced astringency that Apple (Manzano) have if they have any green on the peel at all?

![]() We harvested about 440 kilos of Lakatan bananas, bound for the port to be shipped over to the Island of Cebu.
And also these Amerikano cooking bananas, a Cardaba-type that the filipinos call Amerikano because of the size of the plants (60 inch circumference.)

I've been to CEBU (moalboal) and there I saw endless fields of Bananas anywhere along the road from the airport to Moalboal... why do they need to import more bananas ? Or do you ship your nanas to CEBU to be shipped away by plane ? I miss Philippines SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! I've left a piece of my heart in Moalboal. I wish I could live there .... |

![]() Rick, I've only been to Cebu once, and what I saw there were mostly the Cardaba cooking bananas along the hiways. I didn't visit the airport so I didn't see the area you're talking about. There are a lot of people in Cebu metro area, and the island as a whole isn't the greatest for field crops, whereas Mindanao where I am is a breadbasket for growing crops of all sorts.

![]() Charles, for those of us who have never tasted the Philippine "national banana", Lakatan, could you describe how its flavor differs from that of the regular old Cavendish?

![]() Mark, I would be glad to give it a try. When I first came to the Philippines I am sure I'd never tasted any other banana than US store-bought Cavendish. Boy was I ever in for a surprise! When I put the first Lakatan banana in my mouth, I remember I felt like I was being hit with an explosion of taste and aroma. They smell different, and the taste includes something of a sub-acid component, which has been described elsewhere here as Tart Cherry Pie and Custard. I would not, however, cast its flavor as being so tart as Cherry pie. Perhaps cider and custard is better. I will also say that now Cavendish, which I once used to love and eat daily, now seems so bland in comparison that I only bring it into the house when I have nothing better for use in cooking banana bread.

![]() Thanks for the description Charles. They sound delicious. I have a plant from Jon (pitangadiego) that is supposed to be a short Lakatan (Tomoc). I hope I can coax some fruit out of it and they are anywhere near as tasty as the Philippine-grown Lakatans.
