What causes stem rot?

Hi all,

I’m not experiencing this personally yet, but it’s bound to happen at some point. What generally causes it? Couldn’t find too much Info. Ik it causes browning and breaking of the stem, but is it linked with root rot?

Cheers

Excessive moisture.
A plant has more water than it can use.
One of your plants in another post has stem/ excessive moisture issues.

A Youtube search with keywords stem rot, root rot, tropical plant rot, overwatering, should answer all of your questions of the causes and cures that will affect your tropical plants.

Degree and between 20-30 degree soil temp

Thanks

It really depends on what part of the plant you are calling the stem. A banana has a below ground stem and a fake stem made up of leaf sheaths aka pseudostem that grows above the ground. If you are referring to the pseudostem rotting as seen in your variegated Tani photo, that is not caused by excessive moisture or excessive lack of moisture. That type of rotting has to do with a non-functioning vascular system between the leaf sheath and the cortex. This type of rot can easily spread to other leaf sheaths that are in direct contact depending on the variety.

Thanks PRGaint.

Good info to know! I guess the other type with the main centre leaf snapping and rotting is caused by overwatering.

Thanks

Your rotting stem is acting like a sponge and wicking the excess water in your soilless mix.
Hopefully in your warmer indoor conditions, new soil and longer time under artificial lighting the plant will sort itself out.

"Direct" moisture such as a humidifier to the stem. Not enough sunlight. Not hot enough.

I've cut back the stem, removed the rotting outer stem and exposed the upper corm. it's in rehab. i put a small plastic bag over the very top for the greenhouse effect and to prevent dry air from drying out the very top

This is it today, it's grown slightly in the last 1-2 days. so it's not dead yet lol thankfully.
