What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
Do young plants have different nutritional requirements?
Is pure potash a good one? If I get another large rabbit and let him run around the plants will he do more fertilizing than eating? My last rabbit was great - when we shared bananas he would eat the peel and I would get the stuff inside. Anyway what are individual members preferences in this regard? |
Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
I use composted kitchen scraps as well as slow release osmocote, and all different kinds of packaged fertilizers and trace elements of that nature. Liquid fish, liquid seaweed... manure works well too, overburden soil, etc.

Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
I use bunny berries in different ways.
Large plants as a mulch. Pile it on! Smaller plants get bunny berry tea. Small small plants get a weak tea. Next time I plant I will try to work some into the soil. I do not think you can over do it with the larger plants. I tried. Smaller plants I am more careful with. Next year when I get a pair of pups about the same size, I will do an experiment with it. Grow one with berries, one without. Plants love it! |
Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
Fertilizer like Miracle Grow works well for awhile for small plants, but does not contain magnesium or calcium I have discovered after seeing problems with my plants growth. I later possibly figured out why they dont add it after mixing Calcium Nitrate with Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate) in my garden sprayer to add these missing nutrients. It seems that the two chemicals if mixed together at the same time bind and turn into a nice gypsum mud and clog up sprayers. Now I mix them separately in two different containers until fully dissolved, then mix the two solutions together. This way they dont turn into mud lol. I have read that Potash contains a lot of chlorine that can kill soil organisms, but probably a lot of fertilizers use potash, including miracle grow.

Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
Not sure if best, but its what was recommended to me from local grower. I use 6-2-12. Had my bananas on some "fruit tree" fertilizer first few months, bought a few more bananas and was advised the 6-2-12 and ever since there has been a huge difference in growth and health of banana plants. And I probably under fertilize just giving about a cup a month. But if it is working I am hesitant to fix it or change it. They said the 6-2-12 was a special blend they have made specifically for bananas, still to new at the this to argue or dispute lol

Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
My plants grow well, but my pseudostems aren't thick. I run into trouble when the plants get too tall. Any suggestions for fertilizer? I read somewhere it need more N, but not sure if that is correct.

I use different fertilizers at different times, but for fruiting bananas "Fruit Fuel" sold by our member Richard ( Plants That Produce) is outstanding. |
Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
I have 2 AeAe that are about 6ft. and a Black banana. Hoping I can find some fertilizer to pick up locally. That way I can get hubby to pay for it, lol.

Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
I throw 10-10-10 down monthly
Every 7-10 days I use 1 part urea and 2 parts potash Ever since I started doing this, my pstems have bulked up nicely and a beautiful dark green leaf |

Re: What is the best fertilizer for bananas?
I just use LITTER...............
But I found that the best way to get thick Pstems............and huge Bunches is the way you do the pruning............... Pups removal.........and selection.......... And the way you manage the Mat.............. Banana roots like the Litter................it runs just above the soil........and grows in the litter.............. A bit acid environemental...............full of Tanins............and humic acids.......... Pruning is the best way to get better plants.............. If you know how to chose the next plant...............among dozens pups.............you will achieve what you want.............. Without super fertilizing............ Just Litter and Pruning............... The secret is Pup selction............ Donīt leave pups to grow large............because the wound in mother plant is bigger.................. You have to feel what pup is the best................ Pups are different from each other.............you can see what is the thickest.........and healthier............... For exemple........... In this mat...........from this mother plant I already removed like 6-8 pups............and just leave this one...........the thickest............the better positioned.............and the healthier of them all................. It grows like crazy................withou fertilizing............. Just the litter from my own garden.............grass...........and ocasionally some Ficus leaves that I pruned from the walls.................. I found that Pup selection is the key...............to get thick plants........ This is the Flower............(one can see the Ficus on the wall)............ And this is the Bunch........... I remove the old plant too............completelly with the corm.......... Here if I leave the older plant after harvest.............the chances to get Cosmopolites sordidus is great................so I remove all old plants with the corm.......... And finally..........I affraid of chemical fertilizers........kkkkkkk I donīt have much experience...........thatīs why Iīm affraid............affraid to over fertilizer........... So..........I follow this concept....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwjnegybTcc |
