Re: What bananas do you grow?
Are you talking GROWING or "growing"?
I guess my idea of growing bananas is a bit whacked, but it you ain't producing blooms and fruit there isn't much going on IMHO  Mike |

Re: What bananas do you grow?
1. Saba
2. Raja Puri 3. SH3640 4. Sweetheart 5. Musella lasiocarpa 6. Dwarf Brazilian 7. Tall Brazilian 8. Dwarf Red 9. Tall Red 10. Pisang Raja 11. Ae Ae 12. Mahoi 13. Hua Moa 14. Igcpoca 15. FHIA 23 I'm not counting the 3 or 4 kinds that I dug up to get rid of and threw back by my fence. They have since sprouted from the corm and are rooted back in the ground again! I didn't realize how many I have gotten rid of until I listed the ones that I know I still have left. A few years ago I had almost 40 different kinds and now only 15 are left! |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
Mike,
Kanderian is the hands down winner, ripening in 12 weeks. It had a nice size bunch and nice sized fruit, and very brilliant yellow color. Everything else is roughly 6 months and more. |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
Momese,
Right on!! I don't have a backyard, so it is all in the front one. |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
I agree with the rest if you. I did away with the grass in the backyard several years ago. This year I attacked the lawn in the front yard. In another year there will be no grass to cut and only bananas to enjoy.
The front and side yard earlier this year. |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
Wow! What a beautiful sight! What type of bananas are they? My guess would be Saba for most of them, but the one plant with the bronze undersides is throwing me off.
Thanks for sharing an excellent pic. |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
Sodak-Thanks for the kind words.
There is a Saba in the mix but it is not actually visible in this photo. (There are actually a good many other plants in the backyard and other side of the house that are not visible in the photo.) The varieties are (supposed to be) from far left to right: Rose, Goldfinger (FHIA-1) and Grand Nain (all behind fence) Sweetheart (FHIA-3), Mona Lisa (FHIA-2), Goldfinger (FHIA-1), Praying Hands, Misi Luki, Red Iholene, Dwarf Namwah, SH 3640 and Dwarf Brazilian (side of house in front of fence) Mahoi, FHIA-18, FHIA-23, Raja Puri, Dwarf Orinoco, Dwarf Plantain, Jamican Red, Dwarf Cavendish and FHIA-17. (other side of driveway, it is kind of hard to make out all the plants on that side but there are 9 varieties in that grouping) The one with the bronze undersides to the leaves is the Red Iholene. The bloom on that variety is also very attractive. The bloom had not yet emerged when the picture was taken (around mid-July). |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
These are the bananas I'm "attempting" to grow here in Indiana:
dwarf cavendish orinoco namwah basjoo ensete ventricosum maurellii sdc high color mini pink velutina chinese yellow ice cream zebrina gran nain unknowns which are probably one of the above raja puri sumatrana X gran nain cross I have three 12 foot tall orinocos in the garage in storage, along with 60 others, surely I'll be "actually growing", having fruit next year! We do love the beautiful tropical foliage all around the patio and ponds though, regardless of fruit. Sandy in Indiana |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
My hat is off to Sandy. I can't imagine moving 60 bananas to storage. I moved 12 large ones in one day (with the holes already prepared) and it nearly killed me.

Re: What bananas do you grow?
Pitangadiego-I am very interested to hear of your experience with Kanderian. I am thinking about adding that one to the group this spring. Do I understand you correctly that it matures in around 12 weeks from blooming for you? What is a normal height for Kanderian in your part of the world? How would you rate the fruit? Is it similar to Orinoco and/or Pelipita?
|
Re: What bananas do you grow?
As for me the bananas I'm "attempting" to grow are, Basjoo, Orinoco, and Saba. This was my first year so I'm still learning.
My hat is off to those with so many different types, there are some real Banana freaks here :D :D :D and yes thats a good thing. |
Re: What bananas do you grow?
GATrops, I love that photo! From the looks of it, it won't be long til the house will be completely hidden in the jungle! What are the white things at the base of the plants?
