Wellspring Gardens Credible?

I bought an ice cream/blue java from wellspring gardens. It has not gotten here yet but I just wanted to get a feel of how credible Wellspring is.

Bought it via Amazon.

I am a bit paranoid because I hear that many Ice Creams are actually Namwahs. It's the reason why I am asking.

In two years you will know.

You knew the risk.. and you still bought it.?
I assume you read the reviews, which are average for a mail order nursery.

Also if you do a forum search for Wellspring you will get a better idea of what customers have gotten.
Another forum Daves Garden also has some good discussions concerning this vendor.
This vendor has been discussed check out some of the threads you might find something to takeaway.

I hope you got the plant you were wanting does well.

Any recommendations? A solid source for Blue Java?

I sometimes grow peppers, and there is nothing more disheartening than growing something you were not expecting.

Thus, I tried to cancel late on that order. Wellspring assured me this was a Blue Java ice cream, details pending and I will bring you photos of the results for your scrutiny.

I tell you if its not a blue java, I will unleash the internet kraken on them.

I ordered (From Green Earth Publishing) what I was assured were the real deal Blue Java a year and a half or so ago (Right around the time I was becoming active on this site) and was all excited when they came as they had pointy blue green leaves... Then they began growing and the color changed to a lighter green and the midribs became pink and I knew I had been duped...
They looked like this when I got them...

After a few weeks they changed to this...

I guarantee you the two bunches blown down by Irma last year were NOT blue Java...
He also sent me something with wine stains instead of the other banana I ordered, and replaced them with another wrong banana which I later found to be a Dwarf red... If you don't mind mystery bananas, his plants come hardened off and healthy.

I ordered musa basjoo and musa manzano from them. That was last year. My Manzano took off like a rocket. It actually outgrew my house (8ft ceilings). I;m hoping that it will continue like that this year when I put it in the ground. If It produces; great. If not;I dig it up and overwinter it inside.
I looked at the prices on amazon and then their own website and it seemed that amazon prices were higher.

I contacted Ty, thanks. My Dad lives in South Miami, which is a hop, skip and a warp from homestead. I recruited him on a scouting expedition to Going Bananas. If he can try one or look at it, he can pay for it and they’d should be able to ship to me.

Re: Wellspring Gardens Credible?

On the bright side, if your Blue Java turns out to be Namwah, Namwah is an awesome banana and one of my top two or three.

The Blue Javas that I have seen that turned out to be Namwah have been from big box stores who have sourced them from a couple So Cal growers.

As for Wellspring, I have not purchased from him in probably 10 years, but never had any problems with his plants in terms of correct ID or quality back in the day. No recent experience, however.

Re: Wellspring Gardens Credible?

I was impressed with the quality of the nanners shipped by Going Bananas- they seem to be pretty reliable, and even have a "Namwah v. Blue Java" comparison photo on their site, which adds an air of legitimacy.

The plants they shipped me seemed well hardened (I had to buy from the CA list, so all TC) I can't speak to the authenticity of their products, as I have a while to go on fruiting, but I am optimistic. (I am zone 9b, and all container grown)

I will point out that despite the year being 2019, the only way to order from Going Bananas was printing out their order form, and physically mailing them a check. That said, their turn around time was respectable given how analog the process was, also, they reference "the California list" on their website, but they don't publish it, it's a moving target. Basically, if you live in CA and can only get TC nanners shipped to you, you have to just email them directly and ask if a given variety is available to ship to CA, which is kind of a pain, but they did respond quickly. (They had Namwah, Blue Java, Dwarf Red, Grand Nain, Kandarian, Gros Michel, Mysore... no SH-3640s for the golden state though
:(

Re: Wellspring Gardens Credible?

Wellsprings uses agristarts. So they just go off agristarts tags. The blue java from wellsprings will be a tall namwa for now.

I have ordered 5 or so from wellsprings over the years and I know of many other people who have ordered from them. Every plant (other than blue java/tall namwa) was true to type 100@. Great prices but you get what you pay for! Very small tiny plants. They grow fast though. But buying a corm would save you a good couple months.

So in my opinion they are an excellent source for very small very well priced plugs/plants. I even had one order get damaged and they replaced it quickly. I haven’t ordered from them in years but I wouldn’t be afraid to order from them today. But just like 99% of people selling blue java you will get a tall namwa.

Re: Wellspring Gardens Credible?

I've also ordered from Wellspring. The first time in 2013, and again in 2020. Every other plant from them has been ID-ed alright, and I've had good experiences so I don't want to trash them.. but the surviving banana from 2013 vs the banana pups from 2020 are decidedly not even the same species. The new pups have pink veins, which the old one never did. This is actually what got me curious and made me join the forum today; I really have no idea what I'm growing now and I'm hoping to eventually get IDs with the help of the forum. +If *neither* of these pups are blue java I'll still care for them, but I definitely want a confirmed blue java in my little collection. :08:

Do you have pictures of the fruiting bunch from the 2013 banana?

Re: Wellspring Gardens Credible?

I do have some. It wasn't an impressive bunch (maybe 4 bananas total) but I didn't exactly fertilize and it didn't get very much light indoors is probably a big part of why. I have tried uploading from both my phone and computer to my gallery on here multiple times. The site claims my photo posted successfully but then when I go to my gallery's albums nothing is up. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong (I just joined today so still getting the hang of things here). I suppose worst case scenario I could email them directly (from my yahoo email)?
