Weird roots IMO

As the new (proud) owner of a maybe Dwarf Cavendish with 2 much time on my hands I have been studying her pretty closely. She has 1 pup and that's all. So every now and then I pull back the grass clippings around her base and observe a few roots that have white tips at their ends. I'm guessing they're not potential pups because they don't seem to do anything but what are they? I don't recall ever growing another plant that purposely sent up surface roots.

It's gathering water and nutrition from under the grass leaves. The pups will be attached to the mom. You'll know when you see them.

I have several mature DCs, and they all seem to put out some roots very close to the surface. I mulch/compost a good deal - not sure if that has anything to do with it - but they also have plenty of roots much deeper and seem to be doing just fine. Like Momoese said, the pups do not come from the roots they will be directly attached to the momma corm.

I have a sword pup that isn't growing very fast but has been there for 3 of the 4.5 months this baby has been in the ground. I've seen pictures of how pups grow so I was pretty certain these "out of the ground roots" would never become one. I was curious if it's a possible water pup so I clipped off one and put it in a pot; I assume I can't hurt anything by doing this and it really does have a potential "something" at the end. BTW, I only have maybe 2" of dried grass as mulch so it's really not much cover.

FL is very odd. I've had a winter squash die 3 times but has resurrected by forming roots on the runners; I have 3 viable fruits now. Stranger still I have 2 zukes I would have pulled out (dying from that stupid borer which is the KOD up north IME) had I not determined to spend this season (new climate for me) just observing. They've each started 2 new plants. My bush beans kept trying to be runners also.

Weird, weird. weird.
