Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
I'm not there but I do know that Alva and his family had to evacuate. I heard they are fine, but their property is in danger.

Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
I know Rob is pretty close to down the hill from where it's at. We were looking seriously at moving to Puna a few years ago so I did my usual research and I told my wife that Leilani gardens was one of the most beautiful areas, but I would not want to buy there (Even though prices were very low) because it is right on the fire line and a new vent could pop up in your living room at any time... I sure do hate being right this time... I hope it stops and everyone gets to go home soon but I know that either way, insurance was either impossible or too expensive in that area for obvious reasons so it's worse than it seems at first glance.

Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
Safe down here and where I live is not in even the potential path of the flow. The 6.9 quake was centered about 5 miles away and I thought for sure my house was coming down. Most frightening thing I've ever experienced. My video the day before after a smaller earthquake made the front page of Saturday's New York Times electronic edition. See the 2nd video in this compilation. That's my voice narrating the distant pink cloud from my lanai. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/04/u...on-hawaii.html
Lost internet because the broadcasting tower is in the neighborhood with mandatory evacuation where Alva (juicybananas) lives. However, alternate internet land line works. Spent 2 nights away with friends because the constant aftershocks were too much. Now we've only had 1 4.0 quake in the past 24 hours and even that was quite far away off shore. Devastating for the 10 or so homes lost so far and the 1700 who have had to evacuate. New eruption vents keep opening up in that neighborhood and now 11 of them at last count. Had no structural damage but lots of broken glass from things flying out of kitchen cabinets and glass frames coming off walls. I just ran out when it happened and tried to get my 3 dogs. Longest 40 seconds of my life and I experienced the 1989 Bay Area quake which was a 7.1 though much shorter and I was much further away from that. It's shocking that this 6.9 didn't even bring down any of the unpermitted shacks people live in around here. I am quite grateful for building codes! This was the largest quake in Hawaii in 45 years. I'm exhausted and life around here is definitely going to change for the several thousand of us around my area. |

Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
Nice to hear that you are ok Rob!......
As you mentioned, it's a very frightening experience, specifically if you got children's!....Approx 2 years ago, I was in a family vacation to Quito, Ecuador!....While I was there, I experienced an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude!.....Lasted for about 1 minute!....I remembered, after the earthquake, everybody was on the streets, even sleeping in the streets!.....Don't even mention the aftershocks!.....The following day, we took a plane back to US, continuing family vacation in Orlando, Florida!.....

Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
I just can't imagine what it's like having a volcano pop out of the road where you have been driving every day for years, not knowing when or if it will stop. The whole island started as a small active vent many years ago, you know... Pu u O o was a small vent not that long ago...
You gotta admit it wasn't the smartest place for a subdivision, but what you gonna do? Many of the people living there just accept it is how it is and move on with their lives, but it's still tough. Pretty much all of Puna will be covered again, someday...

Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
Has anyone talked about the island moving yet? With all the earthquakes, I wonder if it's the plate shifting or from explosions like a bomb going off? This video is why I ask, after watching it appears the plates have not been shifting much lately. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0tnqPmwWvk |

Hey Rob,
Are the Airports still open? Is that lava tube by your house filling with lava? Is it even possible to get down to this area? |

Re: Volcano Erupted in Hawaii!
Civil Defense message put out about 4 hours ago:
"This is a Civil Defense Message for Saturday, May 19 at 11:00 in the evening. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor active flows. Flow front #1 has crossed Highway 137 at the 13-mile marker and has entered the ocean. Flow front #2 is approximately 400 M from Highway 137. Highway 137 is closed between Kamaili Road and Pohoiki Road. Kamaili Road is closed between Highway 130 and Highway 137. All persons are asked to stay out of the area. The lava has entered the ocean. Be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume...."

Media hype is not helping any of us actually living here. We've left our home and bananas primarily because there is now only 1 road in and out, and it's full of cracks pumping out steam. Until another road is opened, which would mean clearing lava that was flowing a month ago, we are living 25 miles north of Hilo. The road near our home, about 5 miles away, got covered Saturday night. We have a number of friends who have had their homes and land destroyed, but we remain not at any risk unless a new fissure opens up upslope from our home. When it did in 1955 it made it to the coast in a very fast 36 hours. We've removed pretty much everything of sentimental or monetary value from our homes, aside from big furniture and appliances, which are covered by insurance if stolen or the houses burn down from lava. |
