Re: veriegated musa basjoo

These do really exist and are very nice plants. Here is a picture you can find on the internet if you look hard enough. These have been refered to as Musa basjoo 'Fuji-Yama variegata', and also just as Musa basjoo 'variegata'. They are rare TC sports from Jean-Luc Penninckx in Holand but are in essence just variegated "plain" basjoo.

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Hi mitchel, did you get the pics, i am sorry i dont have any variegated basjoo that i can let go at the moment, i have only one main plant , with four pups, two have variegation, one ordinary, and one lime green, i need to build up a small stock before i can let any go, i wish it was possible to micropropagate this plant, but upto now variegated bananas dont reproduce variegation through micropropagation, the people who have tried this have lost a lot of money. Ae ae has been around for a long time now and it is still a rare plant, variegated basjoos have only been around as far as i know for 6 years, and very few people have one. Unless micropropagation works one day, this will be a rare plant for a long time to come, if anyone knows of a succesfull micropropagation of a variagated banana please let me know, then any one can have one, all the very best, Tony

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

I noticed today that my Variegated basjoo has just put up a new leaf that is compleatly green. Does this mean that it is reverting back to a normal one ?

The two small pups have barely grown in the 5 months since they appeared and they are too small to see if they are going to be green or variegated.

Any info welcome.

tony palmer 11-03-2007 02:05 PM

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Hi Mark, it is to early yet to tell if it is reverting, on average on each leaf your plant will display 50% variagation along with 50% green, but, the balance is variable so it is possible to produce a leaf all green, the next leaf will let you know if it is going to revert or not....Tony

I was just wondering if the variegated basjoo are as hardy as the regular basjoo. That is indeed a really cool looking nanner...

Randy I would hate to lose it finding out the hard way:mad: It burns very easy in the sun on the cream sections.

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Hi Randy, the variegated basjoo is a beautiful plant but it needs more care and attention than the normal basjoo, because of the lake of green they dont grow as fast, they burn easy and if you loose the stem in winter then you have lost your plant there's not much chance of another variegated comming up from the base. I had a reply on the garden web once from a member in florider he had 7 variegated basjoo's and they where stunning plants is he a member on here

Tony,

Just out of curiosity, I'm new to the Variegated banana scene, and I was wondering... It seems like there are quite a few different types of Variegated Bananas and all vare considered rare. So, how does everyone find them:2687: ?! I am planning on going to florida next spring in hopes of returning with some type of Var. Banana but I have no idea where to look. How did you come across yours?

- Matt

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Hi Matt, to be honest you are in a better position in the US than i am in the UK, variagated bananas in the UK are very rare and i came by mine purely by chance, there are a number of sellers both in the US and Thailand, a good place to start would be EBAY, but seeing as you are going to Florida, check out Rare tropical plants.com in Florida, i know he has several variagated basjoo ae ae, and various other variagated nanas. all the best Tony.

A quick up date on the new leaf. It finally opened and after a week or so you could see the colour changing slightly. So panic over ( for now )

Hi everyone, New to this site. Does anyone have a variegated basjoo pup for sale? I live in New York. Have any of you verified thier cold hardiness?

tony palmer 01-01-2009 06:24 AM

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Hi Paul,
My variegated basjoo has spent three winters out doors without any protection and the stem has survived –7.5c so far, it looks like its probably just as hardy as the normal green basjoo but if It was to lose the stem through frost the chances of the rhizome sending up a variegated pup are very slim, all the pups it as sent up so far have been normal green.

Happy New Year to all.

Tony

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Hi tony, thanks for your information. Should your mother plant produce any/enough variegated pups as it continues to grow, please keep me in mind for one. I am sure there are others in line ahead of me for one. Have you thought about submitting tissue from the mother to a lab for cloning? Happy New Year to all!!:nanadrink:

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Paul, I have heard of two people in the UK that have tried and as far as I’m aware, variegated Basjoo when TC’d doesn’t reproduce variegated clones you only get normal green.

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

As soon as someone sends a Basjoo corm to me, I am anxious to try variegation induction with some methods I read in recent research. It claims to produce variegated plants that will remain true to type.
Anyone who has a sacrificial corm or two, please PM me.

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Scot, Is Basjoo not available in the U.S ? Its our most seen banana over here in garden centres and plant nurseries.

I take it you would only need the corm and not a lot of trunk?

If so I may be able to help you out.

Scot,

If you pay for postage I could send you a sacrafice come spring time

Re: veriegated musa basjoo

Tony, Yes we have lots of it here, but I just don't have one to TC. My son has a new one in Illinois, but he is losing his house before spring :(, so that won't work. Yes, only an inch or two of pstem left on the corm is all that is needed.

I just need a small corm or two. Perhaps I will take up Tophersmith on his offer. I will also check the local nurseries this spring to see if they might have one cheap.
