Hi Paul,
My variegated basjoo has spent three winters out doors without any protection and the stem has survived –7.5c so far, it looks like its probably just as hardy as the normal green basjoo but if It was to lose the stem through frost the chances of the rhizome sending up a variegated pup are very slim, all the pups it as sent up so far have been normal green.

Happy New Year to all.

Tony

Hi tony, thanks for your information. Should your mother plant produce any/enough variegated pups as it continues to grow, please keep me in mind for one. I am sure there are others in line ahead of me for one. Have you thought about submitting tissue from the mother to a lab for cloning? Happy New Year to all!!

Paul, I have heard of two people in the UK that have tried and as far as I’m aware, variegated Basjoo when TC’d doesn’t reproduce variegated clones you only get normal green.

As soon as someone sends a Basjoo corm to me, I am anxious to try variegation induction with some methods I read in recent research. It claims to produce variegated plants that will remain true to type.
Anyone who has a sacrificial corm or two, please PM me.

Scot, Is Basjoo not available in the U.S ? Its our most seen banana over here in garden centres and plant nurseries.

I take it you would only need the corm and not a lot of trunk?

If so I may be able to help you out.

Tony, Yes we have lots of it here, but I just don't have one to TC. My son has a new one in Illinois, but he is losing his house before spring , so that won't work. Yes, only an inch or two of pstem left on the corm is all that is needed.

I just need a small corm or two. Perhaps I will take up Tophersmith on his offer. I will also check the local nurseries this spring to see if they might have one cheap.
