Default Veinte Cohol Wiki Page

Hi I was wondering if we could put up a page on the Wiki for Musa Veinte Cohol. I have one and I find the lack of discussion and information about it kinda lacking. So I was hoping we could get a page up and start uploading pics, writing a description, and laying down the facts.

I think so many people were disappointed with the Veinte Cohol and that is why you see a lack of interest. I had really tried to hunt one down to the point that I called a research station in Miami. The guy there said that it was eliminated from the collection because it did so poorly. I was a bit irritated since it seemed to be a good, short season banana that could be stored dormant and get a nice fruit set in early in the second season. Well, a friend of mine finally got one. He does so well with bananas that I decided to see how his did. Well, it basically refused to do much for him the first year and did not overwinter. I don't think many folks have been happy with Veinte Cohol, but I'd be pleased to find out I'm wrong.

I've got three going, they seem to do okay, but they are still small. It was a cool year last year and one produced a pup and I separated them when I dug them up and potted them up in late fall and kept in my greenhouse. BigDog fruited his in 2009, if I recall correctly, and he was not impressed with the quality of the fruit but it was still in a pot and that may have had something to do with it.

well in short they dont survive the winter very well. i dont think they are that practical to grow. there was lots of hype around them though. i kept a large sized one with buttons on the corm outside and it rotted because of a pipe incident. the one i kept inside did good untill early spring.. it started rotting for no apparent reason.

because of the fact that there was or still is a waiting list to get one in the usa and the fact that the pups are not cheap to replace im letting you guys have it.

viente cohol in Ga.

Ron, when a researcher tried out something like 40 varieties of bananas in an experiment in Savannah, GA, Veinte Cohol was the only one he could consistently get to fruit. However, he DID NOT over-winter them outdoors. He grew potted plants in a greenhouse and planted them outside early each spring. I believe he had 10 out of 10 produce mature fruits by October. Nobody ever claimed that they were hardy, just fast.

Tony, I remember you showing me that site before. They are sold out now. Do you remember when they last had them available?
