Default Veinte Cohol Fruit in Pennsylvania

Hi all!

It took three growing years and perfect timing, but it is possible to get a VC to flower and fruit in Zone 6. I have over 8 hands and lots of tiny bananas. In another week, I will have to reduce the plant's footprint and bring indoors (its in a pot already) since it is getting a bit cold at night. Targeting a post-Thanksgiving harvest date

Erik

Congratulations! Very impressive for your zone, even with a Veinte Cohol!
Beautiful plant too.

This is inspiring! Trying to do the same near Dallas, Texas with that cultivar and a few others. What size pot are you using? Thank you for sharing.

Thanks!

The pot is about 20-25 gallons and is 30" diameter at the top and much smaller at the bottom. I half-buried the pot in the ground to prevent the wind from blowing it over.

Erik,

Awesome skills.
Am I correct to say that in zone 6 you have flowered and fruited 3 plants.
Patupi,Velutina and now a VC.

Congratulations Erik! You fruited two multi-year AA's in the same season. That's dedication!

Thanks guys! The fruits are filling in even with the cool and short days....

Mike - Actually I flowered and fruited 4, The other is "velutina like" but the fruits aren't fuzzy. I also flowered a dwarf orinoco and dwarf chamaluco but never took them to fruiting. (lack of dedication since I know what Bluggoes taste like)

Great news....takes dedication to get one to fruit in zone 6. I'm in Illinois and got an Orinoco to fruit. Took a couple years, stored it in the basement and it ripened the next year. Not many bananas but they were tasty and good.

Thanks all!

Mary I wish you luck on that goal in OH.

My key to success has been to figure out the timing of the plant. The growing season in my area (zone 6) is too short for a plant to develop 10+ leaves and then go onto flowering/fruiting before the cold temperatures hit. I end up having to bring the plants inside when they are full size. My house has just enough room for one full size banana plant in the hallway.....

On a side note, last winter was very mild so my fig trees did really well with the early spring and produced tons of fruit. The pawpaws had an average year and I still have dozens of fruit in my fridge and freezer .....

I got to taste a pawpaw this summer (from a friend that has a couple of trees) and they are delicious. Wish I could find a supply locally.

Congrats on the fruit, very exciting. I'm also growing a VC in Ohio. Did you have it in a window all winter or with grow lights? Or just let it go dormant?

Thanks! It looks like I have one more week of "not so cold" overnight temps so my bunch is still hanging on outside. Last winter, I kept the plant indoors in a 15gal pot (it was 5' tall). I bent the leaves down to save space and collect more light from the windows. I didn't bother with extra lighting because indoor rapid growth isn't worth the effort (IMO). Dry soil is also good for keeping gnat populations under control...

Just an FYI for those gnats, grab yourself some mosquito bits and soak them in the water you're going to use. It'll kill them off and you won't have to worry about them even with the wet soil.

This is a small bunch that I successfully overwintered in the basement for the winter and they ripened up the next Spring. I had to bend the stem over to get it into the basement. In Illinois.[IMG]
