I recently put all my bananas in the yard for the season. I will be curious to hear how your short cycle plants turn out - especially the new FloRida one.

I have a VC that might fruit this year and I was hoping to have a Patupi fruit as well but my plant kept growing/dying then pupping all winter. It finally has improved now that we have more warmth and sun!

That VC will fruit for sure! Keep us updated. Very nice sized VC since they don't really like winters. Lol

Patupi and most AA ones are very picky in my zone. The grow, slow, grow, slow deal is very common when the temps jump around in spring and fall.

Good job man! Keep in touch. I will for sure report back on the Florida. I have my doubts. It should be fast since it is an AA type but I doubt it will beat VC and Patupi here in 8b. Gotta remember the tropics things work differently.

Will do! I'm hoping for 2 flowers this year. My VC and DO should be of proper age!

Tytaylor77: what were your winter low temps, and how did the VC take it?

We had a horriable winter. Down to 20F one night. Broke a 60 year record. Lost most all pstems since I had no protection on anything. VC all died to the ground like always but didn't loose any corms. They all lived and popped up early March. Then we had some warm/cold/warm/cold weather late March early April that really set them back. They are going strong though.

And you're still able to get them to flower+fruit despite such setbacks?! That's amazing....

Ty you are my hero! For zone 8B, which strategy do you think is better? Plant in the ground and protect the P-stem? Or overwinter in fair sized pots in some kind of greenhouse etc?

Thanks Mudturtle! That's one of the things I am testing now.

I know a 3' pup coming out of the greenhouse and planting it into the ground works. VC overwintered in the ground does not like to be wet at all! This past year I threw plastic feed sacks flat over the corms and chopped pstems. They all survived just fine and came up fast in early March. If those late March cold snaps didn't hit I would be way ahead but they are still big. I'm removing all pups to make sure my chosen pstem gets full energy. I haven't measured but I'm guessing the largest is about 5'.

I'm betting in our zone we can do either way in ground or pots. North of 8b/9a I would say pups in pots would be the best choice. I'm taking lots of pics and will report my first flower when it pops.

Good luck to you all! I'm betting we are gonna see a lot of VC and Patupi bunches this year.

My parents are 9a aND get away without doing anything special. They did lose one pstem once. I'm 8b and just starting with bananas. I'm planning to just try some light protection when I see the cold coming, I have citrus too so I'll have to protect that anyway. But I think I'll pull a few pups around late November to pot. I don't have a good place inside, but I might try a small green house outside with a lamp.
