Chong, are you planning on growing these outdoors or in your greenhouse? I had figured you were putting the in your greenhouse for at least the winter and would have grabbed those plants!

You will recall that I had two Dwarf Nios that survived the cold greenhouse in 2006 when the power went out for 7 days and six nights here in Seattle. The temperatures dipped into the single digits, yet they survived. Then in the winter of 2007-2008, they did fine until Feb-Mar 2008, and slowly turned to mush.

I could put the 3 VCs in the greenhouse. But because, now, the temperatures are dropping below 50, and the daylight hours shortening, I would rather that they grew out a little longer, where the environment was more favorable. The forecast low is 43F this weekend. That means that if I were to have them shipped here next week, by the time they get here, the temperature may be even lower than that. Even if they grow dormant, they would have a difficult time to recover in the spring since we don't accumulate that much heat during the short days of late Winter and early Spring. So, I don't want to take the chance with them like the Dwarf Nios.

I know that given the record I have with this vendor, this is arguably more of a leap of faith than with TTN on my part. But I have their word that that's what they're going to do. I may be unhappy later on, but at the very least, I will have live plants, however small.

I wish that we had more sunshiny days here in Seattle. Right now it's been raining off and on (mostly on) and I feel the need to bring all the newly arrived and transplanted plants inside the greenhouse, and I'm running out of space.

BTW, I was #11, 12, and 13 on the list, so if anyone there is #14, you're next. and winsorw, 3 more to go, and then it's your turn!

From the weather forecasts for Homstead, FL, the highs and lows are 88F/72F on the average. That means that, there's still a lot of warmth left to help the pups continue to grow. I don't know how many mats of VC they have, but it might be that they could more that just four. So, maybe in another month?

Bob,
You are too much! Thank you very much! Drop me a line before you come over. Maybe we can meet somewhere nearby North Bend for some Starbucks or Costco (LOL) coffee. North Bend is not too far from Issaquah, where the headquarters of Costco is.

2010, I love it! . . . . Boy! That's optimism, I tell you. (LOL)

I just submitted an additional order and asked for an update. I have moved up to number 29 from 30 - they are now serving number 11. Looks like spring until I see it. Oh well, at least I am not at the end of the line....

Scot,
If you look at my earlier post, I mentioned that I was #11, #12, #13. Those three pups are allegedly tagged with my name and put on hold for delivery in the Spring. The next pup would be working on is for #14. I don't know if they have more than 3 VC mats, but it took 8-1/2 weeks to get from #8 & #9 to #11, #12, & #13 (mine). You can probably extrapolate from there and have a reasonable prediction as to when they will get to #29.

Wow! That's simply beautiful! Congratulations!

Coincidentally, the forecast in the next couple of weeks in the Seattle area includes 3 days that will be in the 90s with average highs in the high 70s and low 80s. Global warming must be really becoming a reality in the Pacific NW after all. I couldn't any happier. I'll call GB to ship my plants on Monday! Woo-whoo-hooo!

By the time I get it, I will have tc'ed a bunch of then anyway. But it will be nice to get a good pup to keep as a source for future explant material. Does anyone know if VC is patented? If so, I will just have to cause a sport to grow and rename it. I think I will call it Musa 'Viente Al Cohol'

Are you kidding????? Move south??? With a new granddaughter, do you think that'll happen if my wife has anything to say about it? OK, well, maybe another greenhouse(s), which in fact my wife has been egging me to get. But dang it, work keeps getting in the way. And I can't even keep my house projects going.

But kidding aside, my wife actually liked Palm Beach County, especially Del Rey Beach, when we were there for the hurricane recovery efforts in 2004-2005. But I could tell that she was just accommodating me, and she was missing the kids/grandkids all the time. She wasn't complaining or anything like that. But I could tell that was homesick a lot.

We did try to move last year, to CA and then Vegas, but at my level, it's not easy to keep busy, or even try to look busy, when there's not much work to do. The worst part is after talking to clients and satisfying their requirements, the person in my company that used to do the work with them would really look bad because I can tend to make their problems sound so simple. And then, the more clients ask for my services, the more I get alienated from the people that I worked with, who were there ahead of me. It's as if I'm saying bad things about them. It's not easy working in a place where you're always treated like an outsider.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Scot,
I don't think anyone can claim a patent to VC because it's a natural hybrid from the Philippines. That would be like claiming a patent to Saba or Praying Hands. At least with Praying Hands, one can claim a Copyright, but not a patent, because that name is not the common name in the place of origin.

So, do you have a VC corm for TC'ing already? Or are you referring to the first corm that GB will be sending you?

Chong, I have arrangements made for a corm to be here in about a month from a private owner for TC'ing. I will make a few additional plantlets to keep explant material on hand.
The reason I asked about VC being patented is that I did not know how it came about. Sometimes it is the name that is copyrighted, or the plant itself is patented, or the media used or methodology to propagate it is protected by patent.

I have my TC lab ready to go, but I am still running trials to ensure minimal contamination. Things are being sterilized and re-sterilized first. Then I need to add some shelving and lights for phase 3 acclimitization.

Scot, a bit off topic for the thread but, I did a wiki search on "gros michel" and it listed you as growing it. Is this an "original" gros michel or is it a "FHIA 23" ? I just ordered a couple of these from GB because I figured they were as close as I could get. As I understand it they are a cultivar of the orig. Thought you might know better........Thanks, Bob

Just thought I would give an update on my Veinte Cohol. A couple of weeks ago, I dug up and potted 3 pups, one having about a 3' pstem, to overwinter in my dear friend's greenhouse. Today, I dug up the two largest pstems and potted them into a 45 or 60 gallon pot to overwinter in my garage. Once dug, I found two more very small pups just starting to come up. Well, needless to say, it was a MONSTER job for one person as you could imagine as soon as you see the pic I have included. The largest pstem is around 6' and the smaller one is right at 5'. So, with all this said, with a bit of luck, I will be eating my first Veinte Cohol fruit next summer. The plant will be housed in my unheated garage over the winter.
Also, hopefully, next year I will be able to share this little gem with some of my friends. Everyone keep your fingers crossed.
There is a green yardstick sitting up next to the pstems for scale!!!

Harvey,
You oughta see the Ice Cream that I plan on digging up and dragging under the house. It has 5 pstems ranging in size from 9' to 6'. I was amazed that it hasn't even sent up a flag leaf. Well, I guess now I don't want it to as it would NEVER have time to set fruit. Hopefully, I will be able to find a few friends with strong backs and weak minds to help. But that is what I have always be called by my friends, so I may have to go it alone!!! LOL

Randy, looks great. I think I'll do the same with my Cohol. I will probably dig it up in two weeks. I hope we can overwinter them successfully. If so, we'll be munching on sweet bananas next year! Yiippeee!
