VC Flowering a little early
 

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share pictures of my flowering VC. The flag leaf came the first week of June. The flag and preflag were the only leaves produced since putting the plant outside this spring. The leaves look pretty worn and have cold/wind damage but hopefully it can get some energy to make a banana or two. If not, I can try again with pups and this time I plant to count the number of leaves produced before fruiting.
Maybe I can get my timing better for next year!

Woohoo awesome Erik. I been meaning to ask you how the new winter setup did. Looks like it did great! Make sure you don't let them totally yellow on the plant! They will split! Also I prune the bottom 1-2 hands! It is a must!

As Ty mentioned, don't let them get completely ripe on the plant and don't add to much irrigation (water) to the plant either, otherwise they will split!.....


Just cut the VC bunch when they are plump, filled-in nicely and they still have some green on them!....


Picture taken on 12/21/2016 of my VC bunch......I harvested the bunch a couple of days later, after 12/21/2016 in which they were still green and let them ripen over the counter!....

Thanks everyone for the good words and advice. The dry heat of summer should help prevent over watering. The main plant has pushed about 5 small pups so I'll have some to experiment with for next year.

I will continue posting updates just so people know what can realistically be expected in cool climate areas.

Keep count from when the flower was totally out! You should be eating those little nanners in 50-60 days! It may take a week or 2 longer since it doesn't have full leaves! Great job proving it can fruit in zone 6!!

Gives me hope that I can accomplish the same thing here in WV...although I may be a bit cooler than, you Erik, I think it may be doable...now to get some VC pups.

Thanks everyone! As of yesterday, I can see the first hand with 3 fingers. They are already fatter than my dwarf orinoco fingers were when that flower opened last year.

I really want some VC pups now...I don't care if they aren't the 'best' tasting ones around, If they are blooming in Z6, now, there's every chance they will have ripened by September.

They may not be 'best tasting' but they flower and probably have a better chance to ripen if you get the timing right. I also made a mistake in leaving my plant outside last October when we had high winds. All the plant leaves got 'shredded' which isn't an issue EXCEPT it made cleaning the spider mites difficult all winter long when my plant was indoors.

I will have more pups than brains in a few months if you can wait. IF not, I obtained my VC from a member in Puerto Rico.

Hi all

Just to follow up on this tread, my VC fruits are not filling in. They have remained small and are about 1" long and green. The flower portion of the fruit has dried and has fallen off.

The pups are growing very fast, so it looks like I will start over and try again. Hopefully I learned from the experience and can improve.
